I find it hilarious, and quite sad, that it is being reported that several local stations across the south edited this part out of last nights episode
i think that's pretty much myth that's being sensationalized by liberal media

I'm a Christian who believes the Bible shoudn't be taken literally. I think much of the meaning in the Bible should be questioned and debated so that a person of faith can reach his own conclusions about what it means to him.

Please don't take this questions as a bashing or anything. As a Catholic growing up, this question never occurred to me, but since becoming an atheist, I've wanted to know what a believer thinks. Anyway, if you believe in evolution and are a Christian, does that mean that you don't believe in "The Fall" or original sin? If so, then what was Jesus saving us all from? It's entirely possible that I am not thinking of the full picture created in the New Testament.

there are probably similar production errors in all sorts of shows shown nationally that are not sensationalized

It's not. A lot of people think they are though

And that is a good point. It seems like a lot of people in this thread didn't watch last night's episode...or at least the first 40 minutes. If you did and you didn't notice the anti-religion lecture being presented before your eyes, then...I don't know.
NdGT was doing everything he could to subtly attack a particular well known Christian belief.
At one point just before a commercial, he asked why evolution has taken so long to be accepted as solid fundamental science, and then he paused to look up at the sky and shake his head in disgust. At that moment, the show broke to commercial.
shite like that is retardedly pretentious and unnecessary.

watch the second episode.
I'd like to think at some point this series will focus simply on the cosmos without somehow attacking Christians in the process...fingers crossed.

LA Times, not exactly a conservative news outlet, article
quote:
Some outlets have characterized the omitted section as the "only" reference to evolution in the episode, but this is not exactly the case. While it is the only instance in which Tyson specifically referred to humans developing from other forms of life, the premiere episode also included the introduction of the Cosmic Calendar, which condenses the 13.8-billion lifespan of the universe into a single year in which modern humans evolved only in the last hours of Dec. 31.
And in another scene set on a beach, Tyson explains how life emerged from the oceans as an animated Tiktaalik, "one of the first animals to walk on land," crawls out of the waves and onto the sand.

The Roman Catholic Church takes no official position on evolution, and is in fact very friendly to the theory. It is American Evangelicals who are so dogmatically opposed to the idea, moreso than anyone in the world. It is they who push ridiculous bills through legislatures trying to mandate the teaching of creationism, not Catholics.
All of this boils down to the Bible. Evangelical protestants long ago went "all in" on Biblical inerrancy. They did so before the amazing scientific discoveries of the last 50 years, which has in many ways passed them by and made their beliefs that much more stretched.
The Catholic Church does not believe the Bible is historically inerrant, and it does not believe the Bible is the sole deposit of divine revelation. Therefore, it is very easy for the church to buy into scientific advancement without surrending its fundamental dogma.

Why would you think he is just attacking Christians? He isn't attacking anything, but this frustration you are perceiving is most likely directed at any person that would turn a blind eye to science in favor of their religion. I am not going to claim to be an expert in religion, but most of the issues scientist have with religion are based in the teachings from the Old Testament due to creation. That book is followed by more than just Christians.
