The LSU par-3 golf course is now a parking lot??

It's the beginning of golf season so I brought my son to play the LSU "pitch and putt" course. Apparently, during the football season, they announced that it was going to be demolished and turned into RV parking.
I know it's surely been posted here but couldn't find on search, and at least this can be a heads up to the golfers out there.
Spend money to build it, then more money to demolish and pave it

That's a shame, but expect to see more of these kind of stories as the Nicholson Gateway Plan gets underway. LSU will be juggling parking spaces for some time to come.
quote:
The first phase of this redevelopment project begins with the Nicholson Gateway project, located in the northern segment of the Corridor between West Chimes Street and Skip Bertman Drive. This 28-acre site includes a mixed use retail-housing center and a student residential district. The mixed use center creates a town center environment that is designed to attract students, sports fans and the surrounding community. Located across the street from Tiger Stadium, it draws from the excitement and identity of LSU’s rich football tradition, and is ideally situated to draw in fans on their way to the stadium. Its location also takes advantage of the drive-by traffic on Nicholson Drive, and is within an easy 10-15 minute walk to most of the core campus. The center will offer an exciting active urban environment with shopping, restaurants and entertainment that complements the traditional campus activities—a place to go for a bite to eat after the game, between classes, or on the way to visit Mike the Tiger.
North of the mixed use center, a new residential district will replace the old Nicholson Apartments. This new district will provide updated student housing for upperclassmen and graduate students that is competitive with off-site offerings. Designed in a traditional campus arrangement of buildings framing quadrangles and parks, it will extend the qualities of the core campus across Nicholson Drive. Both sides of the street will be unified, and Nicholson Drive will feel more like a drive passing through campus than a by-pass road that divides the campus.

How old is the kid? I'd take him to city if he's around 10

Well you have to look at it this way...
That made absolutely zero revenue people brought their own balls and didn't pay a thing to chip and putt. All while it cost a good bit of money I'm sure to keep up with.
The parking lot in the other hand is a one time expense that will pay for itself and then eventually be a straight revenue producer is years to come.
So chip and putt equals losing money.
Parking lot equals gaining money.
I'll miss it like the next guy but clearly it was a rational decision.

Hate to see any Golf Course cease operations but this development is badly needed.

I wouldn't necessarily say that's the case here...

When's this suppose to get started?

Will the Nicholson Plan bring a "strip" to LSU with nice bars and restaurants?

Well if the Nicholson Plan does bring nice restaurants and or bars, and Lsu has anything to do with it. You better believe the vast majority of Lsu fans will not be able to afford to go.

You sound a little mad over this.

The work could begin in 2014, with completion possible by 2017 or 2018.
The Nicholson Gateway, a 28-acre site located across from Tiger Stadium will feature mixed-use retail housing, a student residential district and retail space according to the project’s executive summary.

They see it as spend money to maintain it, or make money but selling the spots. If they can get $1000+ per football season, and whatever they make on baseball parking (RV parking is free across the street for baseball) then it's a residual profit.

Yep it's sad. I loved the pitch and putt course but mainly because it was free. So I can't blame them.

The entire area is getting a badly needed facelift. I don't think it is going to keep the thugs who live north of the development out of here but it is a good start. What is really needed is an improvement to Alex Box infrastructure, more access etc.
