Salary Cap Projections for the League and Pelicans

Looking ahead to the 2014 offseason, which teams will have cap room this summer?
The league’s early projections for next year’s salary cap is $62.9 million, up from this year’s $58.7 million. The luxury tax threshold is also expected to climb to approximately $75.7 million from $71.7 million.
...New Orleans Pelicans (26-38)
Projected 1st Round Pick: None (to Philadelphia 76ers, top-five protected)
Projected Cap Space: None
The Pelicans have a sizable investment in Eric Gordon, Tyreke Evans, Jrue Holiday and Ryan Anderson.
Their best player, Anthony Davis, is a more economical $5.6 million on his rookie contract.
Anthony Morrow has a player option at the minimum. Jeff Withey and Luke Babbitt aren’t guaranteed, also at the minimum. Brian Roberts and Darius Miller are eligible for $1.1 million qualifying offers to become restricted free agents.
If Morrow walks and the Pelicans clean house of anyone non-guaranteed, the team can muster about $6.3 million of cap room — which isn’t much more than a Mid-Level Exception (MLE) at $5.3 million.
The Pelicans do not project to be a cap team.
Unless New Orleans wins a top-three pick in the lottery, they will send their first-round pick to the 76ers.

Eric Pincus is a Lakers beat writer for the LA times and he keeps track of all the team salary information for BasketballInsiders. So he's about as reliable on the subject as we can get with out an official press release on what the new cap will be. Keep in mind, the rumors were that the cap would go up to about $61 million last year and that didn't happen.

I think we are fine.
I think they will try to move Gordon. I am not sure what we can get in return.
But I think our core is pretty good.
Holiday, Tyreke, Davis, Anderson.
Smith, Ajeaca (sp), Whitney, can be a decent rotation at the 5.
bench, AR, Morrow, Roberts(I hope not, but MW loves him) Aminu, Bobbit, Miller
Please let the Steamer go

We need to find either a decent 3 or 5. Assuming Dell and Monty think we can move forward with Holiday, Gordon, Evans, and AD, then a decent 5 is all we'd need. I'd think the MLE is enough to get that done.

SF looks like the better FA market to tap this year.
MLE SFs in no particular order:
Jordan Hamilton
CJ Miles
Wesley Johnson
Thabo Sefolosha
PJ Tucker
Richard Jefferson
Brandon Rush
Marvin Williams
Trevor Ariza
MLE Bigs in no particular order:
Elton Brand
Joel Anthony (player option)
Kris Humphries
Andray Blatche (player option)
Spencer Hawes (MLE?)
Dejuan Blair
Glen Davis
Jordan Hill
Emeka Okafor
Aaron Gray
Andris Biedrins

What's depressing about those lists is that two of the guys that many would like to see in NO (Hamilton and Hill) likely could have been acquired at the deadline. Unless I'm mistaken, then the team would have Bird rights for each guy, rendering cap space relatively unimportant.
Even if they can't unload Gordon, this roster:
Holiday/Rivers
Gordon/Evans/Morrow
Evans/Hamilton/Babbitt or Aminu
Davis/Anderson/Babbitt or Aminu
Hill/Davis/Withey
looks solid. They can still bring Jackson on board or flip him this summer.

Jordan Hill certainly meets my criteria for a big (reasonable foul rate, good rebound rate), and Demps was interested in acquiring him for free, but wouldn't give up an asset for him. I think the problem was we had no available 2nd rounders and they obviously value Pierre Jackson more than a 2nd rounder or he'd have been traded. Basically Jordan Hill was available for $1 and a $5 was the smallest bill we had and the Lakers weren't giving change back.
The Jordan Hamilton situation is more interesting. Do we really like Roberts? Do we not like Hamilton? Did Denver not like Roberts? Not liking Hamilton is a real possibility, Demps has often gone in a very different direction from board consensus.

very good points.
I'm not trying to slam the FO, just one of those what ifs.

Yeah, I just think it says we will likely have interest in Hill but possibly not in Hamilton. Honestly, if the plan is to use the MLE on a SF, Ariza and Marvin Williams would be better fits. This team needs more veterans.

This is just depressing. So we'll be stuck with the same group as this year. We're going to add a bottom tier Center, just like one of the 4 we already had, and that'll make all the difference? Even fully healthy(which we will never be), that team is still just a borderline 8th seed.
Demps needs to do something big this summer. The team is already crowded with 2nd bananas. He needs to build around his star (Davis) and swing for the fences. Something to give this team some excitement. A package built around Anderson, either Evans or Gordon and Jackson might bring a star level play. That's what we need to add to Davis and Holiday. Not another back-up..

When healthy this group didn't look that depressing.

I think that's overstating the centers we have on the roster. Will we be adding a 2nd stringer rather than a 1st stringer? Probably. But we've been running with 3rd stringers. Look at what we have, what they're good at and what they're bad at. We need a big that can rebound and play adequate defense without fouling a ton. We don't need a 1st stringer, we need a big with a complimentary skill set to plug some holes we currently have.

You have to wait for those opportunities though. Carmelo wouldn't come here meaning Kevin Love is likely the next opportunity. If he works it out with Minnesota or the TWolves decide to rebuild rather than reload with a Ryno package, I'm not sure where or when the next opportunity will come.
Aldridge looks happy in Portland again, but will he stay that way now that it's becoming apparent they are just another playoff team? Monroe certainly could be available, although I like Anderson as the 3rd big and I've always been iffy about moving Anderson for a big besides Love.

This is the dream right there. To pick up Love and put him next to Davis. Say after the draft we offered Anderson, Gordon, Jackson and two 1st round conditional picks (2015 unprotected and the next conditional on Love signing an extension) for Love, Martin and Luc. Would the Wolves go for that? That'd be better than anything the Lakers would offer them.
We would only get a one year rental for Love. We'd have to hope we would make a big run in the playoffs and hope he would pick up his option. One of his best friends in the league is Holiday, so we'd have that going for us. Plus playing next to Davis would be a lot of fun for him. It would be a huge splash. A great line-up..
Holiday/Roberts
Martin/Rivers
Evans/Luc
Love/Withey
Davis/Ajinca
That's a 5-6 seed team right there..

With Rubio and Pekovic it seems like they'd rather reload than reset. Now if say the Lakers get a top 3 pick and offer Wiggins or another potential star for Love, they'll have to think about it, otherwise you have to reload, especially if you want Adelman to come back.
Posted on 3/14/14 at 12:08 pm to TigerinATL
Davis/Love isn't happening, but if it did, they would essentially operate unchecked.
Posted on 3/14/14 at 12:21 pm to TigerinATL
I thought the pick was top 5 protected?
Posted on 3/14/14 at 12:29 pm to LosLobos111
It is, but there's practically no chance of us finishing bottom 5 which means the only way to keep the pick is win a top 3 spot in the lottery. But I don't think I really mentioned our pick. I did mention the Lakers and top 3 in the context of they've expressed interest in trading for Love and would probably prefer Love to a potential star that's too young to fit in Kobe's window.

It's a long shot, but I'd think a package around Anderson might be more tempting (especially if we package Jackson with some picks). We need to pair a real impact front court player with Davis. Anderson and Davis's skills just clash with one another. So, if we can package him and get a borderline all star type of player, we'd be set. We missed out on Jefferson this past summer, so we need to rectify that mistake.
It'd be awesome if we got Love, but there are other options. Such as Horford, Monroe or Lee. I'd even settle for someone like Boozer or tweeners like Josh Smith or Faried. Just someone to help out on the blocks and give this team some more power.

I don't see how Minny considers such a trade, as other teams would have more to offer even if they didn't have a Wiggins or Exum.
The Lake Show can trade this year's 1st right after they are drafted, but they have no additional firsts for trade until at least 2019, no 2nds until 2016, and the only players under contract for next season are Kobe, the corpse of Steve Nash ($9.7m), Robert Sacre, and Kendall Marshall's team option.
Love's contract is so big that it also limits how much the Lake Show can take along with him if Minny insists they eat long-term contracts like that of JJ Barea, Corey Brewer, or Kevin Martin.
A single 1st round pick would be the worst return on a superstar in years on paper, even worse than the Grizzlies trading Pau Gasol to the Lake Show for Marc Gasol and 2 late 1sts.

Supposedly the Wolves really wanted Gasol. So they could package him in a S&T some kind of way. That might help the numbers come together. If it was the 1st pick of the draft, plus Gasol, maybe the Wolves might consider that..
Posted on 3/14/14 at 2:13 pm to brmark70816
The Wolves may have wanted Gasol, but I think that was in conjunction with Love, NOT Pekovic.
Pau plays like crap at the 4 as opposed to the 5.
