What is its platform. I honestly don't know.
The Tea Party is focused more on the massive government debt and the entitlement state. They are for lower taxes (individual, small business) but are at odds with big business on several issues. These people don't mind shutting the government down or defaulting on our debt to win a fight. The tactics of the Tea Party can be compared to a kamikaze pilot. Obviously, they hate ObamaCare because it adds to our national debt and is more government control.
These people are good Americans. I'm not criticizing them just giving an honest description. They are split on defense issues, social issues but united against the establishment of their own party. Rough estimates place them at slightly less than 1/3 of the GOP vote. They are the grassroots movement along with the libertarian wing of the party.

His libertarian thinking provokes a questioning of governments role in everything which is fine but he has to pick those areas very carefully.
If you notice Rand picks issues and attacks them with constitutional basis. For example, he's currently on a 4th amendment crusade. That message should appeal to everyone except McCain/King side of the Republican party and the Clinton side of the Democrat party. (These guys have contracts to dole out and adhering to the 4th amendment deters their political patronage.) His arguments on the campaign trail seem logical and constitutionally based, even though the courts could see his arguments totally opposite on specific issues. If Paul does win the GOP nomination he will have the ability to do what no GOPer has been able to do in recent history, attack the Democrat nominee (looks like Hildog at the moment) from the left. That broadens his appeal especially in the general election.

His statement about Clapper is damning!

I heard that clip on the radio this morning. It was pretty damming.

No one is doing this.
What do you call it when state legislatures shut down voting precincts on college campuses, eliminate early voting on Sundays or declare college student ID's an unacceptable form of ID for voting while keeping gun licenses as an acceptable form of ID for voting?

Which will require kissing the arse of Israel.
Israel will definitely be a problem since he's already broken rank with AIPAC on war with Syria and sanctions against Iran. Another land mine he will have to avoid is abortion, since it's a deal breaker for the Evangelical Chrisitans he will need to the secure the nomination and the young people he's trying to attract to win the general. So far, Paul has done a good job of giving speeches that play just as well to the Democratic base as they do to the Republican base. But on the issue of abortion, how does he tell the Republcan base what it wants to hear while not giving the Democrats ammunition to paint him as another Todd Akin?

He cherry picked the topic for this audience. He is very pro-privacy, which should actually play well with this crowd.
I will be interested to see what he says and how "far" he goes. I am intrigued by Paul but I am not a libertarian (though I appreciate many of their concerns and share some positions) and I also believe in a stronger foreign policy role than Paul's father (and probably than Rand, himself).

During a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on March 12 of this year, Ron Wyden asked Director of National Intelligence James Clapper a simple question: “Does the NSA collect any type of data at all on millions or hundreds of millions of Americans?”
“No, sir,” Clapper shot back without a pause
That was a lie. A lie directly to a congressman at a hearing. (IDK,if Clapper was under oath so IDK if he committed perjury).
But according to our politicians on the hill, that lie is okay.
Now juxtapose Clappers actions (on the same NSA topic) to whistle blower Sowden.
Sowden, who's purpose was to expose the NSA to protect Americans from 4th amendment violations, is now enemy of the state by the same politicians that defend Clapper.
That's the picture Paul was painting.

He'll reach a few, but I imagine any message of responsibility and self-reliance will be met with some hostility there.
It will be hard to change things in the GOP without trying to reach young people. He's got to try.

I'm an evangelical with Libertarian leanings and a Tea Party mentality.
Right now I've vote for Paul or Cruz without even thinking twice about it. If the republican primaries come down to these two, it's a HUGE win-win for the country.
ETA: Would a Paul-Huckabee ticket be the best chance for a republican landslide? Paul appealing to the Center-left and Huckabee appealing to Hard Right?

If Paul gets the GOP nomination, I would love to see former military, CIA or defense department official as his VP selection. A strong character with this kind of background would neutralize a lot of foreign policy criticism from the GOP and Democrat uber-hawks. Maybe Colin Powell. I know that selection wouldn't go over well with the hard right and probably make a lot of people cringe (including myself) but Powell would lend a lot of foreign policy experience and crossover appeal to the ticket.

I think his views on foreign policy, the war on drugs, drone use and domestic spying will probably go over pretty well there.

I'll bet both the Republican and Democratic establishments are watching Paul very closely and taking notes. One thing that's certain is that it will be hard for FOX News to treat him like they did his father.

Fox News is just waiting for the establishment to rally around one candidate before they fall in line as well.
