I will venture to say the crowd will be split about 60/40. There will be some who will want to hear him but there will be the other who will show up and raise hell because the letter before his name is "R".

I hope there is security to remove those that raise hell because he is a republican and that rand just ignores those that are attacking him without substance.

He does, but this speaking engagement at Berkeley is not a particularly ballsy thing to do.

He is speaking on the NSA and Personal Privacy. This is one of the safest possible topics at an institution like Berkeley, where the NSA is looked upon with utter contempt.

If Rand goes to Berkeley and speaks on the second amendment, or the minimum wage, or extension of federal unemployment benefits, or repeal of Obamacare, or Benghazi, or the IRS' involvement in Tea Party groups, or the EPA, or climate change, or the Keystone pipeline, or deficit/debt reduction, or states' rights, etc. - THEN it would be meaningful.

It's a safe subject in a safe environment before a crowd that will be in full agreement with his position on the NSA and personal privacy.

But can you think of a successful politcian in the history of American politics who lead with his chin? Walter Mondale ran against Ronald Reagan in 1984 on a promise to raise taxes, but I wouldn't call getting routed 49 states to 1 a successful campaign.

EDIT: I also don't expect him to talk about cutting off aid to Israel, his support for a peace deal with Iran or pulling American troops out of the Mideast when he speaks at an AIPAC gathering either.

I think you have taken my post out of context.

I was neither criticizing Rand Paul nor suggesting that he put himself in adverserial no-win public positions.

My post simply addressed the contention that this particular speaking venue, on this particular topic, is an example of having "big balls" , which I said I do agree he possesses. This is a very safe environment and subject and I feel quite confident there will be no noteworthy disruptive protest activity.

Today Paul goes into the belly of the beast. Does anyone know if we'll be able to watch it live somewhere?

Not sure, but he should be streaming his speeches on his website.

Paul will focus on spying, foreign policy and minimum sentencing. Probably come out in favor of legalizing pot. If he is going after the hearts of the youth then he should stick to those topics.

He should toe the "states rights" line on pot. Don't want to lose the conservative base pandering to the pot-smoking hippies of Berkley.

Oh, he won't go big government on pot. He will bring it back to state rights at the end of the day to put a bow on the issue.

I know that Oppenheimer taught there and he was a card-carrying member of the Communist Party who couldn't have got a security clearance if we didn't desperately need him to build the first nuke.

Rand got himself a California burger on Monday. (Wonder who's going to eat that other one.)

It just finished. Got a huge hand when asked about a 2016 presidential run. Wearings jeans. Crowd was, just as I posted it would be, extremely friendly and supportive. Watched it live on CNN's website. All of the questions were highly predictable and Paul-friendly. He didn't make any controversial statements in his speech, nor in any of his answers in the Q-and-A period. Played it very safe. Said everything a Berkeley student would want to hear.

This is the music they played at the end as he walked off.

I don't see too many cons viewing legalization as a dealbreaker.
