I finally watched it.

I swear I'm not trying to troll or anything but holy crap....I do not get how this film has become cult favorite. I guess it's supposed to be a comedy, but the only time I cracked a smile was when Donny's ashes blew back on Jeff Bridges...and even that scene you could see a mile coming.

This effort by the Coen Brothers is weak imho....just a bunch of eccentric characters in a lame and unoriginal kidnapping storyline. I imagine that had I seen it when it came out in 98 when I was much younger, "maybe" I would have thought it was entertaining....but to watch it now, it's just barely entertaining and only good for one the one watch...and hardly that. I really wanted to like it....while I didn't hate it, I could have easily done without seeing it.

This is the ultimate "repeated viewings" movie. I didn't quite get it the first time either. All I can say is watch it again, don't worry about the plot, and just enjoy the absurdity of the characters. If you still don't like it, it's not for you.

Oh, and I don't see how you can call it unoriginal. What is it derivative of?

That's one of the few parts that wasn't that funny.

It is extremely quotable and the non-verbal acting is brilliant. Heck, the verbal acting is brilliant.

Goodman has one of his best performances, and Turturro and Hoffman extract every possible nuance from their limited lines.

I can see how it is not everyone's cup of tea, but I find the movie rarely misses a beat.

In the opening fricking scene he writes a check for $0.69.

How is that not fricking hilarious. You really need to pay attention next time you watch it.

Probably one of top 5 favorite movies.

How can you not laugh at everything that comes out of Walters mouth?

Nope. This movie gets better with every viewing. Lots of people don't appreciate it the first time around. The the second time you pick up on some of the subtle nuances. And then after the third time you start to really realize just how great it is.

You have no frame of reference here, JP. You’re like a child who wanders into the middle of a movie and wants to know…

It became a cult favorite for the very reason that you see the dissension in this thread to your OP. Most people, like you, saw it for the first time and thought it was, to put it in the parlance of our times, "meh." But some saw it the first time and recognized a lot of the subtleties that exist in the movie and told their friends about it.

When it came out on video/dvd, people could watch it multiple times and pick up on the nuances of each scene (like how Brant reacts to Bunny saying she'll suck the Dude's cock for a thousand dollars... Brant can't watch, though, or he has to pay a hundred, and then the Dude's little quip as Brant is dragging him away from Bunny, "Uhhh... I'm just gonna go find a cash machine.") If you aren't paying much attention to the movie, you miss things like that. That scene is top-to-bottom hilarious and gets funnier with each viewing, from the Nihilist passed out in the pool with a bottle of Jack, to Brant's awkward interactions with Bunny and the Dude.

So, as with a lot of movies that can't truly be appreciated upon initial viewing unless you are really paying attention, it became a cult classic. The hilarity is not in your face. It is subtle. It is often delivered in a deadpan manner. The scene where the Dude's house gets broken into at the beginning of the movie and he's getting drowned in his own toilet ("Where's the money, Lebowski!?" "It's down there somewhere, let me take another look.") is a prime example. When the porn star pulls out the Dude's bowling ball and asks, "What the frick is this?" and the Dude's response is to look at him as if he's a moron and say, "Obviously, you're not a golfer." It's all very clever.

And clever humor is difficult to pick up on with one viewing.

The cops taking the dude's stolen car report while the other cop is digging roaches out of the ashtray cracks me up every time.

quote:

Younger Cop: And was there anything of value in the car?
The Dude: Oh, uh, yeah, uh... a tape deck, some Creedence tapes, and there was a, uh... uh, my briefcase.
Younger Cop: [expectant pause] In the briefcase?
The Dude: Uh, uh, papers, um, just papers, uh, you know, uh, my papers, business papers.
Younger Cop: And what do you do, sir?
The Dude: I'm unemployed.

One of my favorite things about that movie is how people just keep getting into his apartment.

Easily top 5 if not # 1 for me. It does get better with every viewing.

I'm assuming if you don't like TBL then you probably don't like Fargo.
