1999 must have been the year that the agenda was about how awesome having sex with high school girls is because American Beauty cleaned up.

...there's always an agenda.

I honestly very much enjoyed WOWS, Dallas Buyer's Club, and 12 Years a Slave...dunno if "white guilt" or "homosexual AIDS agenda" ever influence nominations/winners, but MM, LD, and Eljiofor (sp?) all did great jobs and were all deserving, imo.

...I did think it was very funny when Ellen said "there are two possibilities here tonight. One, 12 Years a Slave wins Best Picture, or two, You're all racists."

He should have won it for Wolf of Wall St. He was great in that movie, but sadly Hollywood and Washington are on a homosexual kick right now, so an AIDS infested Mcconnehay(sp. ?) gets it. It is what it is.

Mcconaughey was great in Dallas buyers club, no one should have an issue with him getting that award

Leo is a beast and everyone knows that, I don't need him to win an oscar for me to continue watching all his great movies

Sorry if my opinion is not on par with what you think. Next time I'll ask you first before I decide what movie and actors' performance I liked better. Jesus you people are fricking sensitive.

There was actually a post in one of these Oscar threads that didn't appreciate Ellen's joke and thought it proved the so called "agenda".

Leo doesn't play enough gay/mentally retarded/black/underprivileged/handicapped/AIDS infected characters

He'll never sniff an Oscar

God, this argument is so fricking tired. It becomes embarrassing after awhile (or should)for some of you. Of course, movies that portray some sort of sympathetic character or popular cause garner some support because of that sympathy or cause, but it's not nearly the controlling factor that some people think it is.

Oh, btw, you left out the Holocaust.

How does Pitt embody cool? As the director Andrew Dominik noted in a DVD extra for the 2012 film Killing Them Softly, “When you watch Brad, you always feel like something’s going on under there, but you’re not quite sure what it is. I think that’s the reason he’s a movie star. He has that quality of mystery. He doesn’t invite you to share his position somehow.”

He doesn’t invite you to share his position. That is as good a definition of movie cool as there is. The cool actor invites admiration, envy, and desire, much more than empathy, because he is unreadable. His characters leave you wondering what it would be like to be them, without ever imagining that you could.

Wow, very well said.

MM is very cool, but the author is not really talking about raw coolness. It's deeper than that. Cool is how the emotions are portrayed by the actor. MM can connect and Leo has to play cool is what they're saying.

Although I disagree to some extent. I believe Leo has the definite capability of playing a character that allows connection (Arnie Grape...) but it does kind of make sense.

DiCaprio is a very solid actor. He is not the greatest of his generation as some people seem to believe.

That's about how I feel about him. He a solid A-lister that delivers a great performance and does so in a professional manner that hollywood execs can rely on. But some of his roles could be filled by any other professional actor in Hollywood.

McConaghey didn't just win for DBC. It was one of those wins where the Academy awards an actor for his entire body of work over the last year or two.
