What's wrong with golf in Baton Rouge?

Why are the majority of the courses struggling? Several courses have closed over the last 10 years and several more are not making money. What gives? Is BREC to blame? Is it fair for the privately owned courses to compete against a government run organization that relies on our tax dollars to break them even?

You'd think supply and demand would work. If people aren't playing, lower your price.

I was thinking about that. What do you think the green fees should be at the following courses. (Including carts and consider it a weekend rate)
Santa Maria
Beaver Creek
Bluffs
Island
Copper Mill
Greystone
Webb

Its a problem a lot of places in the country. Too many golf courses were built.
But Louisiana being a horrific golf state doesn't help

According to the National Golf Foundation, only 14 new courses (in 18-hole equivalents) were built in 2013 in the United States and another 157.5 closed their doors, for a net loss of 143.5 courses.

According to NGF statistics cited by Koppenhaver, a total of 3.7 million people took up golf in 2013, however, 4.1 million golfers left the game, for a net loss of 400,000 players. A net gain of almost 260,000 women golfers was offset and more by a net loss of nearly 650,000 men. The biggest losses were in the 18-34 age group, where nearly 200,000 people found something else to do with their spare time and their disposable income.

Had a conversation about CM today. Some in the new ownership group (the HOA) want to raise the green fees up to $60. I almost fell out of my chair.

Just MO from the northside of the parish.

Copper recently lowered there rates
They are 44 weekend now which I think will bring in a lot of business
IMO at that price point it's the best public deal in the area

Is this supposed to increase rounds played?

They had to get it down to get the revenue coming in. I just think its really unrealistic for some of the HOA members to think many will be playing there with fees of $60. I'll take my money 20 minutes up the road to the Bluffs for that much.
I understand they are going to build a clubhouse and do some other stuff. Hopefully it will be that type of course in the future, but its not there.

It used to be 60 or 65 and if seemed like it was busy most of the time but I chose to not play it for that price
Their new annual pass rates are very attractive too

Legitimately is a worldwide problem like a poster above posted.
And to anyone who thinks paying $30 is too expensive to play golf is stupid. It's golf, it's an expensive game.

Yeah, Webb is nothing special but I don't think it's overpriced
BREC is not in the business of overpricing golf

BC hurt it a bit too. I usually play most of my golf twilight and playing BC at $27 is a good deal. Also, BC was in a lot better shape (save for the sinkholes that didn't really affect play) last year.
