Are kids who take Karate more or less likely to get into a fight?

I am thinking about letting my 12 year old son take a martial arts class. The idea is that it would instill discipline. The thought occurred to me how this might led to more fights.
On the one who wouldn't want to use your training? As a member of the military I know we welcome the opportunity to finally use our training. So under this idea he is more likely to fight because he is ready to fight and wants to show his stuff. The idea that they teach you to avoid fights I think is more persuasive to mature adults. Young kids have something to prove.
Along those lines, I think he is more likely to be the target of a fight with those wanting to prove themselves. When I was a kid those kids who took karate where always doing side kicks and showing off their stuff. It was a challenge and a warning to those who were taking notes. What better way to show you are a badass than by beating up a kid who knows karate? It is putting a target on his back.

My son's school focuses a lot on self control, self discipline and leadership. They are primarily taught self defense moves for the first few years.

I think it entirely depends on what kind of kid he is. Is he a Daniel or a Johnny? I took karate and don't recall ever feeling I wanted to show my stuff off at school or anything. I got that out during sparring and tournaments.

You may have a problem with martial arts, but I think you are ok with marshal arts.

I would love to do this.
Btw-I have Ninja like agility.

Jujutsu is the best answer IMO.

I was in a crappy situation because I wanted to take karate as a kid so I could beat people up, but my parents wouldn't let me because I was so young. I guess they were afraid my bones weren't strong enough or some crap. Then when I got old enough I had lost interest.

every kid I knew that was in to karate was weird as hell and mostly just used their mad skills on trees and shite

Probably get picked on more for taking karate. Usually means he sucks at sports.

probably reading this in the wrong context, but do you mean that's why so many military members act like douchebags in public and want to start fights?

Get THUG LIFE tattooed across his knuckles and you won't have to worry about too many kids messing with him.

A side benefit is a lot of self confidence. I started tae kwon do in 4th grade. It has had a life long positive impact on me.
I highly recommend it.
Later switched to shotokan which I stayed with thru LSU. Awesome set of skills to have.
And I'm pretty sure I was not the weird kid. No swords, knives or throwing stars. 1 set of numchuks I have damn near knocked myself out with.
I highly recommend it.

If he is taught right, that won't happen.
When I was in college in Jackson, one student thought he would pick a fight and kick someone's arse. Word got back to sensai. Sensai picked him out for sparring at the next class. Beat the hell out of him. Then told him karate was for defense, not bullying people.

Just get him signed up at a "box." He will learn discipline. And I hear that kipping pullups are almost as great for 12yo kids as they are for adults.

We always saw them as nerds. I got into a fight with one and he said he had to go home and ask his mom if he could kick my arse. He left crying after I beat his arse in about 20 seconds.
Karate doesn't translate to street fighting IMO.

My nickname was Seagal in middle school...everybody knew I wasn't fricking around, so definitely less likely in my case.

Chief Illiniwek claimed he knew karate but I never saw him use it. I think he may have been pulling my leg.
