Luby's (Laredo, TX) review

When I was 13 in July 2000 we went to Laredo, TX for a mission trip for my Church. The first place we went to when we got to Laredo was to a Luby's to eat.
Location: The place was in a Lardeo ghetto, which pretty much describes the whole city. It may be in Texas but the whole city felt like it was 3rd world Mexico. Not a white person in sight. Everything run down, unappealing
Atmosphere: When people think Luby's they think of a retirement home or a hospital. Lots of old people and a funny smell. This place felt like more of a hole in the wall Mexican restraunt that served American food. Dim lightning, weird painting and patterns on the walls. Clientelle also skewed toward large families with kids running around
Staff: There was a language barrier, that is for sure. But they did their job without complaining.
Food: I ordered chicken and macaroni & cheese. From what I remember the chicken was undercooked and dry. The macaroni and cheese was cold but actually wasn't that bad in terms of taste and texture.
Dessert: I had blue colored Jello. Hard to screw this up but it wasn't chilled enough - was still kind of runny.
Aftermath: The next day about half of our group succumbed to food poisoning, meaning we had to work on our house project for the week with half of our original staff.
Rating: 2/10
+ Macaroni and Cheese wouldn't be bad if it were hot
+ Staff did their job effectively
- Chicken undercooked that likely led to food poisoning
- Not in a desriable location
- Atomosphere was depressing
- Jello was not chilled enough
- Language barrier with staff
- Clientelle reminded me of the buffett scene from Vegas Vacation

And to think of the grief I got for reviewing one meal at Chili's based upon its cost.

Luby's isn't bad as long as its in a good location
But Laredo is a 3rd world hell hole, wouldn't trust any restraunt there not even Raising Cane's or Sullivan's or even III Forks

I have a friend that went to Laredo to see some family this past Christmas. They were at a red light and a guy threw a brick through the window of their car. They said it is a dump.

Reminds me of my house with the front porch back in College Station. I used to always look forward to Sunday's there on the porch because being across from the Presbyterians, we'd crawl out Sunday morning in our underwear, amongst 4 or 5 hundred empty beer cans, strap on a banjo and a guitar....and wait for the Presbyterians. We were waiting for em to come out of church. So we could sing them a little gospel music. Give em something to talk about on their way to Luby's.

At a point in my life - Many many years ago, I was senior quality engineer for Packard Electric Division of General Motors. One of my plants was in Nuevo Laredo, just down the slum toad thst ked to Boys Town. We stayed in a company apartment in Laredo each day and drive back and forth across the border to the plant (Alambrados Autmotrices) each day.
Laredo, TX is where they would insert the camera hose if they were going to give the USA a colonoscopy. Having said that, I got out of my GM company car and kissed the ground each night when my driver cleared customs and we were 50 yards inside Laredo.
If you think Lubys - Laredo is bad, you should go a few miles to the south and cross the Rio Grande.
I have had cat and dog as a food item. The only dog I ever saw in Nuevo Laredo was on a leash and had a doomed look on his face as a kid drug him down the dirt road.
At that point in my life I had made the decision to never eat cat or dog again. My action to make certain that didn't happen was to never eat meat in Nuevo Larado.

Well I've been quite a few times and granted its not the greatest but boy I've made some money in that little town so I can't complain. The La Posada is a great hotel with two good restaurants but the best is the permanent food trucks. Man they have some great Mexican.
