So lately ive been to some of the coffee shops, a few restaurants, and bars in that area, and i just keep wondering when Freret street turned into freret street.
who is behind it. i dig everything from the free parking lot on the corner to the artsy bus stops. i mean i know this stuff doesnt just happen. it takes planning and stuff. how long was this in the making?

We opened up our office over here about two and a half years ago. There were a couple places. Dat dog was in that tiny building. Company had just opened. There were some yoga and massage places. Since then it has grown even more. It has benefited from it's zoning and available open real estate.

Post Katrina. Started with the opening of Cure and it has mushroomed since. Something needs to happen with the old Frank's Steakhouse building.

The city is footing the bill and I think it all started back in 2011.

Started about 3 years ago I guess.
I can't pin-point exactly who or what group made it happen, but it seems to go hand in hand with several areas of N.O. that have done the same.
Cure taking a chance by opening there was a big first step.
I think N.O. young professionals moving here needed more places like this area and the new attitude and $$$ of the people in this city just made it happen.

There are people working on it right now. Not sure what it is going to be.

what happened to the boxing gym that used to be on Freret? is that the one that opened up on Oretha Castle Haley? and is that little place still on Freret where they used to have improv and stand-up? I hung out in that area a lot more back in 2008 than I do now.

Boxing place moved. The comedy place is still there. Next to The Other Bar, which has free skee-ball, btw.

Good. Man I can actually remeber going there. I think that place has been closed for 25 years or so.

I remember my first time going to Cure. I drove right past it(no sign) and thought this is where my life will end.
The neighborhood is truly a success story.

Cure gets a lot of the credit, but Zeus' Place was the first new commercial activity on Freret. I moved into the neighborhood in 2008, and it was probably about two years after that when things really started to move.
Cure came online in 2010 (I want to say), Adolfo Garcia bought the buildings for High Hat and Ancora, Company Burger opened, and the rest is history.
One thing in hindsight that really pushed it forward was probably that killing in front of the old Friar Tucks. I think that galvanized the city and neighborhood to push out older businesses and beef up safety.
However or whenever it happened, its awesome.

Good point. At one time Valence Street towards the lake from Freret was one of the major areas for crack dealing in the city. It is a fantastic transformation. Driving around the side streets there is definitely some gentrification taking place.

How long has Feret Street Po Boy and Donuts been there?
Posted on 2/10/14 at 10:14 am to skygod123
shite yeah it's free! I think Ms. Pacman is free too, but there is always someone sitting there every time I've been there. It can get a little Tulaney at night, but it's a legit happy hour place to have some beers and throw a few rounds of skee-ball.

It was one of the first. Around 2008 or 2009.
