I am much more annoyed when they say New Or-LEE-ans

It's a fun embellishment of New Orleans' accent and speech patterns. Tourists give us money and are a huge part of our economy. I don't think it's wise to have too much disdain for them.
Possibly the single most intelligent thing I have ever read on the OT. Well done Sir.

As long as people are coming to your town to spend money why do you care how they pronounce it? They're trying to fit in AND they're spending money!!! Bitch, bitch, bitch!
Shut up.

So you have never been a tourist somewhere and mispronounced the name of something there?

Many natives say it this way. My grandfather and many other old blue bloods I know have always siad it that way.

Yeah, but Louisiana offers special opportunities not found in a lot of places.
Was talking a co-worker into Baton Rouge who'd never been this way before; he was on I-10 and I asked him where he was. Told me he'd just passed the exit for (literal pronunciation here): Gross-ee Tee-Tee

"New OrLEENS" isn't acceptable right? I think they would otherwise say it like that and go too far trying to correct themselves.
I don't say it that way when referring to the city, but I do say it that way when I refer to my street, Orleans St. Does this make me a douche?

I'm sure many places have names that only locals know how to pronounce.
There are a lot of Spanish influenced and Native American influenced names of streets, cities, etc out here that are easily mispronounced.

' "Naturally N'awlins" thing on local tv, nobody fricking says it.
I like "Nawlins" and people don't use it in speech, but it's cool in print and such.

Only other place I've been stateside that's given me fits is Oklahoma. Some of those native American town/city names are a bitch to figure out.

Some of the pronunciations are ridiculous, in my opinion. Burgundy street is one example that jumps to mind.

If you think this is not the case in most places to most outsiders, you need to travel more.

There is no rhyme or reason to the way things are pronounced in Nawlins

What about Houston St. in NYC? Pronounced Howston

Brother, unless you've traveled for nearly 300 days out of the year for the past 15+ years, I can promise you that I have a leg up on you when it comes to roaming this globe.

1. Because they have not been there and they saw the movie "The Big Easy" 20 years ago.
2. Because it is printed like that on t-shirts sold in the shops on Bourbon street.
Other than this, exposure to the pronunciation is limited to Janis Joplin lyrics.
