"Stories of survival in the vast Pacific are not uncommon. In 2006, three Mexicans made international headlines when they were discovered drifting, also in a small fibreglass boat near the Marshall Islands, nine months after setting out on a shark-fishing expedition. They survived on a diet of rainwater, raw fish and seabirds, with their hope kept alive by reading the Bible.

In 1992, two fishermen from Kiribati were at sea for 177 days before coming ashore in Samoa."

The turtle blood thing reminded me of an old news story that I read about a family that lost their sail boat in a storm in the Pacific. I remember them mentioning that they were able to catch turtles from a life boat and dingy they had strung together. They were rescued by a passing ship after a couple of weeks.

I still can't envision someone surviving 16 months out there.

Just got finished reading "Unbroken" about the Olympic runner that crashed in a B-24 in WWII and was adrift for over 40 days.

This is unbelievable.

quote:

Ivan indicated to Fjeldstad that he survived by eating turtles, birds and fish and drinking turtle blood when there was no rain. No fishing gear was on the boat and Ivan suggested he caught turtles and birds with his bare hands. There was a turtle on the boat when it landed at Ebon.
Oh, the levels of bullshite that Scruffy claims are incalculable.

I'm thinking back to everything I've done since October 2012. Now trying to imagine floating on a raft in the middle of the ocean the entire time. Holy shite.
