Maybe I don't give the Magnolia State enough credit. I met plenty of nice, generous, down to earth people, because I'm not a minority. If I were, I'd assume I would be (literally?) dead to them. Southern hospitality only goes so far.
you'd fit in well there

And don't kid yourself. There is a lot of wealthy people in Mississippi. They don't advertise it either.
And? It still has the lowest median income

I think MS BBQ is a bit underrated. I dated a girl from Decatur, AL and she raved about their bbq but when I tried it I thought it was just ok. White sauce is pretty good though.

No other state has as large and effective private school association. Hell even some of Louisiana's and Arkansas private schools joined the MAIS (former MPSA)

And lowest cost of living.
You can make 200k a year in California and your standard of living is average. You can make 200k in MS and live like a millionaire.

This is nitpicking but he wasn't from Mississippi and his writing was far more centered in Louisiana than Mississippi.

He did live in Greenville-and yeah he lived all over the south. His best book, in my opinion, The Moviegoer, was set in NO.
But he spent many years in MS, had family there, and is widely regarded as being from the state.
MS is a very rich literary treasure, especially Oxford.
Lots of badass musicians too.

If I recall correctly, Percy is originally from Birmingham. Moved to Greenville, MS after a family tragedy and was raised by William Alexander Percy, an outstanding author in his own right.
Though much of his work is set in LA, and Percy lived in Covington during his later years, his chief influences were W.A. Percy and his boyhood friend Shelby Foote, both Mississippians.

As far as literature goes, Stark Young merits inclusion. His So Red the Rose was Gone with the Wind before Gone with the Wind.
Also notable for being one of the "12 Southerners" / Southern Agrarians who contributed to I'll Take My Stand. Sadly, even people who "know" southern literature seem to have forgotten him.

It keeps La. and Alabama from being neighbors.
