1/2 Questions/Revisit

My biggest questions revolve around the reports of the kids we missed out on telling LSU coaches the day of that they were coming to LSU. This appears to be the Landon Collins approach and I would not be suprised if his brother did the same thing. But, why is this happening? Why are recruits telling LSU coaches they are coming to LSU and then going elsewhere?
Which leads to the next question: We held a lot of spots open for these guys because they wanted to have their "big day." Will we do that again? Or, will we take a different approach? I realize that if you have a 5 star kid considering, you keep a spot open, but it seems like we have been in a big scramble after every defection.
The coaches have done well getting other great players (Adams for Hootie, for example), but I wonder how LSU might play this differently in the future.
Will we look at in-state recruiting differently? Obvously, the "Boys from the Boot" thing didn't work. Half of them are playing for Alabama now. Thinking that Tony Brown was a lock because of his sister was a mistake. Holding open a spot by not recruiting a RB last year in the hopes that Fournette would commit seemed to work, but judging by the others and what they did, I don't know that I would do that again.
So, how does what happened this year change the future? We will have a great class and we might end up better off, so I am not complaining. Just wondering about strategy changes going forward.
Thoughts?

This is the nature of the beast now in the recruiting world.
I don't think you will see a whole lot of change in the near future. Teams want the best guys and so you have to wait for them. Its a chance you take.

The way I see things a school needs to make a quota of takes at each position, and then reserve" several spots for elite, late committing takes no matter what position they play.
Then you have to decide who you can offer that you are certain takes,, and then take the kids that accept until you fill your quota at each position.
I understand this is tricky, and that's why I suggest "reserving" a handful of spots for elite athletes who commit late in the process.

Yeah. If the decisions were genuine, I would be ok with it. But, it seems like these guys set LSU up and intentionally deceived coaches. That is the part that bothers me the most.
Are other coaches telling recruits from Louisiana to lead LSU coaches on so they waste time/resources?
As it turns out, CRob, Landon Collins, Gerald Willis, Speedy, and Hootie all did certain things that made you believe that they were really up in the air when they weren't.
Hootie tried to come back and get LSU going after him again when they were going after Adams. Was that just Hootie's initiative.
We all know what happened with Janzen Jackson and now look who is back in the SEC at Alabama. You could say that Kenny Bell did the same thing.
It just seems like there is a strategy by other coaches with Louisiana kids and getting them to lead LSU coaches on.

this year was an aberration because their were 6 guys is la. that were rated 5* at some point in the recruiting cycle. you can't make these guys do anything and they all believe they are elite and need to be treated that way. the rest of the instate guys are acting an a normal class would act and i expect that is how the 2015 class will act. looking further out, who knows, but we already have commitments from the no. 1 instate player in 2016 and 2017 so to an extent those years won't be the same as 2014.
the only change i would make is have a limit (say 2) on the no. of people i would hld spots for into jan. thus, i would accept commitments from my second choice (but not 3rd or 4th) while still recruiting all the guys waiting to announce. thus, i probably would have to cut a couple of the guys i took commitments from if i got all the guys i was after.

It is a lot easier to ask the question than it is to give a definitively satisfactory answer. As a coach you could tell a kid that you want a public commitment or the spot may be filled by a kid willing to make a public announcement - but that may mean you "settle" for a kid who might be a lesser talent and miss out on some of the elite players being recruited by 20 plus schools.
When you look at the three players of note from 1/2 there were three different reasons for the losses - GW had a family insider pushing for any school except LSU, Speedy was caught up in an A&M pitch to use him more creatively. Brown and Jones were probably discouraged by the relative DB depth charts at LSU vs Bama.
My uninformed speculation is that LSU might have been able to sway Speedy the other way if he had been more honest about the pitch A&M made but I'm not sure what the staff could have done (other than listen more carefully?) otherwise. LSU was in on all of those recruits and lost out because of different circumstances.
For the most part I think LSU fans should just wish good luck to those guys and move on. To be sitting on 18 recruits and the #3 ranked class at this point is not a bad position to find yourself in atm.

Should you really be angry with people who made the same choice you did?

Can't really blame this kids for having huge egos when adult men are follow every single word they say.
The way to do away with this is to stop giving them so much power.

beating bama at least every other year would help. 2 straight years and 3 straight loses for us doesnt appeal to the vanity of 18 year olds. whether the kids are going to bama or not, it makes us look like any other option.
also, immediate playing time is a big issue with some kids. thats why willis and brown didnt sign with us. i cant blame speedy for not coming.
what does bother me about those 3, is that they couldnt help but channel their inner drama queen about the whole thing. if your gonna wait it out til nsd, cool, but dont lie to the coaches about coming when you know your going elsewhere. willis is so full of shite about saying he was an lsu lean til the morning of, or w/e. unless he really is dumb enough to make decisions that way.

replacing Hootie with Jamal was great! But having no answer for Speedy, willis or Brown hurt.
hopefully getting adoree will make us forget all about speedy

RE: playing time? I don't believe that is an issue. If anything LSU has done a much better job of getting their younger players on the field than other comparable programs.
Bama is less of an issue than you think IMO. Kids are committing to teams like A&M and Florida when neither have any great wins to point to from the 2013 season. I understand and feel at some level the annoyance of a fan who wishes the kids would be more direct and tell the staff if they aren't coming to LSU but it often breaks the other way as well (with LSU picking up great players other premiere programs were expecting to land).
You can't rationally be upset when LSU is the victim when you enjoy the same event when LSU comes out ahead.

Bingo! Impossible to do but it would work.

This was not the reason everyone thought he was a lock. He spent A LOT of time on campus throughout his recruiting process. His sister being at LSU was one of those things that definitely couldn't hurt.

how bout we offer everyone we want to? then, we "process" as needed. its classless, but works for many.

It didn't make a difference for Speedy Noil.

Willis had immediate PT staring him in the face, Brown didn't.

My question is did this really happen or is this what people tell themselves to feel better about the situation?
Not flaming, honest question. Just seems like unlikely to me that an entire group of in state kids would conspire to screw over the LSU coaches.

2 kids from in state who both went to the HS were the culprits, and yes it could happen.
The other kid was an out of state kid.

As in a "non-commitable" offer?

my guess is landon collins pushed this on his brother. gw111 didn't want to seem like a momma's boy also helped. gw111 attitude was passed on to speedy who didn't want to screw over LSU and had genuine interest in aTm. speedy hearing the LSU bashing from gw111 ellis peope went to aTm. maybe he would have gone there anyway but the LSU bashing certainly had an effect.

LSU bashing needs to stop on this board, for one thing.
It is out of hand.
