think again

I think some people intentionally follow what they know is bad advice from the OT, just so they can come back on here to start a thread about it

Maybe they would like a little insider info on said destination.

BTW 4 continents here.

Exactly my point.

I would much rather come on here and get your advice on what bar to go to in Hong Kong as opposed to making an account on another forum to get advice from someone I've never heard of and know nothing about.

Hell, you and Golfer have helped me out a helluva lot with my travel issues. So much so that I just mailed 3 SkyClub passes to Golfer yesterday as a thank you.

4 continents as well. I would like to hit all 7 before I hit 45. My sister (no pics) is on a boat right now to Antartica to finish her 7th.

perfect example of why travel advice here is crap

I would not qualify your time as a drug mule in SE Asia, nor that 6 months in jail in Laos as "extensive travel".....it surely wasnt a well-rounded experience worthy of recommending restaurants, or sights to see, unless you want to grade out the various back-alley clinics, window-less vans and human traffic crates you spent the majority of your time in.

I suppose I'm guilty of this since I recently asked about something out of town

I don't consider it much of a brag since I usually only travel out of state once or twice a year.

Stu has a special brand of sarcasm. One of the original gangstas on here for sure.

Disagree completely. When I go on vacations I search tigerdroppings to find the best spots in a city.

There was one thread on Cabo that was money. Found 3-4 awesome spots I would have had to scoure through hundreds of reviews on other spots.

You sound like you sure are proud to have come up with these two awesome concepts. Attention whore.

He's one of the very few posters that when I see their name come up on the right side of the screen, I will click in to see what he has to say. The dry sarcastic nature makes me chuckle.

I think you have a great point, but sometimes I want specific advice; therefore, it is a case by case basis.

my first identification of the "Food Board Attention Whoring" years ago resulted in many a ruffled feather other there. My basic premise was F&D'ers who start threads with pictures of what they were cooking had nothing to do with sharing food knowledge, they just wanted the ego stroke from other posters telling them how masterful each of them was in the kitchen, basically fishing for compliments.

they didnt care for that

but now, what I'm seeing more and more of is:

"What should I do in City XYZ ???"

in this day and age, why, of all places would anyone come to TD to get travel advice? They wouldnt. There are about a 1000 other websites that I'm sure are more suited to make recommendations on what to do on vacation.

my suspicion is that posters want to brag about where they are traveling to, and want some form of ego-stroke as they feel very proud of themselves and their place in life, and they want others to know.

Yea or Nay? "Anyone ever been to _______" threads really are more attention whoring than actually sourcing out useable information?
