This new breed of attention whore OT'er - the World Traveler

my first identification of the "Food Board Attention Whoring" years ago resulted in many a ruffled feather other there. My basic premise was F&D'ers who start threads with pictures of what they were cooking had nothing to do with sharing food knowledge, they just wanted the ego stroke from other posters telling them how masterful each of them was in the kitchen, basically fishing for compliments.
they didnt care for that
but now, what I'm seeing more and more of is:
"What should I do in City XYZ ???"
in this day and age, why, of all places would anyone come to TD to get travel advice? They wouldnt. There are about a 1000 other websites that I'm sure are more suited to make recommendations on what to do on vacation.
my suspicion is that posters want to brag about where they are traveling to, and want some form of ego-stroke as they feel very proud of themselves and their place in life, and they want others to know.
Yea or Nay? "Anyone ever been to _______" threads really are more attention whoring than actually sourcing out useable information?

I agree 100% with all that.

why wouldn't they want opinions from people that have been to the place?
I would probably value a normal person's opinion of a place over some travel blog

I disagree. Travel sites will give you the tourist traps. I ain't looking for that, I want the hole-in-the-wall dives only a local would know about.
I don't wanna end up in some bar on Bourbon with Uncle Stu and Xie and a bunch of other lame people. Oh wait. How's it been brother?

Excellent analysis. You can also find the food attention whores in the lunch thread. I.e. glassman

I thought everyone knew those threads were all not so subtle attention whoring attempts.

You may be right in some cases, but not all.
For instance, nobody comes here to get their ego stroked when they ask questions about what to do in Las Vegas. Everyone has been to Vegas. Nobody thinks you're special that you're going to Vegas, but there are multiple threads a month about Vegas it seems.
Same applies to any of the beach destinations, Chicago, New York, etc...
Lots of threads started about those places, and I doubt the people who start them are looking for a stroked ego.

so you're talking about I Love Bama and longhorn, right?

I completely agree with this.

For some I think it's advertising them being in town so that the female posters can spend the evening with them.

I've never started one of those threads, but I have offered advice to others that have asked. I think some posters are probably showing off a bit, but others probably just think TD is a good place to ask.
It's embarrassing how much I rely on TD for news of all kinds, recipes/food advice, etc.

The two I've noticed today are Asheville and Alexandria, Louisiana.
Clearly that's nothing but ego stroking there.
