A man who had a pipe bomb in his carry-on bag was still allowed to board his international flight from Edmonton last fall, even after screening officers seized the explosive device from him.

The RCMP say they alerted all appropriate authorities, including Mexican airport officials, about Canadian teenager Skylar Murphy, who had been allowed to board a flight to Mexico after surrendering to security a pipe bomb at Edmonton International Airport.
It took four days — until Sept. 24, 2013 — before airport security officials in Edmonton realized they had obtained a pipe bomb, with an attached nearly three-metre long fuse, from the 18-year-old Murphy of Spruce Grove, Alta.
Pipe bomb security failure at Edmonton airport kept quiet
Security screeners had not recognized the device was a pipe bomb and had actually tried to return it to Murphy.
The RCMP said they acted immediately once they were told about the pipe bomb. But the Mounties decided to allow Murphy to finish holidaying with his family in Mexico before arresting him on his return to Edmonton on Sept. 27.

Please, please tell me this article is from the Onion.
Funny part is that back in my GOV days I went to Canada on a training mission and was travelling on a US GOV official passport. Still couldn't get through their Customs with a ballistic vest and helmet. But this dude is cool with a pipe bomb?

now that was uncalled for.
it does remind me of the seinfeld bit where he's making fun of airport screeners..
He's standing there... "What is that? A hairdryer with a scope on it?"
"That looks ok. Keep it moving."
"Some sort of bowling ball candle? Yeah, I got no problem with that, just..."
"You know, we don't wanna hold up the line."

from a more recent article:
quote:
Edmonton airport security personnel opened a pipe bomb after they failed to recognize the explosive device because they believed it was a “wacky tobacco holder” filled with marijuana instead of gunpowder, according to search warrant documents.
quote:
The security guard operating the X-ray machine was concerned about the item, but mistook it for a homemade pipe. The operator had a “bad vibe” and thought the pipe could be used as a weapon or to conceal something inside. Several security personnel examined the bomb, a 15-centimetre steel pipe containing gunpowder with fuses more than a metre long at both ends. An explosive detection test was done on the device, but produced a negative result.
“Oh my God, what is that?” Murphy asked as he saw security personnel handle the bomb he had made. The warrant states that he was “very nervous and embarrassed.” He “pleaded innocence” to his mother and stepfather.
quote:
Despite conversations among airport staff about whether to call the police, RCMP only found out about the device four days later. In the meantime, the bomb was left unattended on a security desk.
quote:
Murphy was arrested upon his return to Canada and pleaded guilty to possession of an explosive substance and was sentenced to one year of probation. He was also fined $100 and ordered to donate $500 to the University of Alberta Hospital’s burn unit.
quote:
[...]an internal review was conducted after the incident, and some employees involved were suspended and others ordered to take additional training. Some training manuals were updated to ensure the protocol is followed in the future.
