doubt he cared enough about the syllabus to ask someone to read it to him. Sounds like bullshite

It would be interesting to see how football & basketball compares to something like baseball & track.

Yes, and you can blame it 100% on the Progressive Movement's goal to dumbify the masses. If you don't think they're behind the deterioration of our educational system, then you need to do some research.

the only way this issue gets solved is for the nfl to form a minor leagues just like mlb. however, as you can see just from reading many posts on here, there are those that say there is no problem; they don't care what kind of student a football is and they just want the fans to pony up more and pay them. if there were a minor leagues for football there would still be competitive football and it would still be great fun (maybe better) to go to the games. the ticket prices would probably go down which would bring the arms race to an end but minor sports would still survive. the colleges themselves are not getting rich off of college football, the tv networks are. and the nfl is saving a bundle. i expect that one day this will indeed be what happens and everybody, colleges fans and players will be better off. and the networks will come out losing some because their audience for minor leagues won't be what it is for colleges. i'm convinced this will happen because i'm convinced there is a ceiling on what the college football fan is going to bankroll and the academic side of most colleges is disgusted with the present situation. the football program is nothing but a factory that bypasses academics and serves the tv industry. according to some, it exploits the players and it damn sure exploits the universities.

quote:I'm not throwing out anything. I am just stating facts. You missed the point entirely. It is not that there may be two or three or even a couple of dozen football players smarter than me. The point is that there is a certain percentage, who knows what it really is, who would never be in college if they weren't football players. Indeed as someone else pointed out they wouldn't even have gotten out of high school. Do I have a problem with this? No, not really. It is what it is. What I do have a problem with is the hypocrisy that these are students who take the same courses as most students and their degree, if they get one, is the same as other students.
You're throwing out the baby with the bath water. I'm sure there are a few Eddie Lacy's, but there are also some football players and athletes who are smarter than you, Tom Bronco. Peter Dyakoski and Ronald Dupree are both very smart guys that I took classes with.
As for incoming guys, Brandon Harris and Jamal Adams both seem pretty intelligent. That's just scratching the surface.
Here is the point. Athlete's make millions for the University, coaches, athletic dept. employees etc. but don't get paid. It is said that their payment is the opportunity to get a college degree. Well if they are functionally illiterate this is just not true. Either they won't get a degree or if they do get one it will be essentially meaningless. I'm not saying pay them a lot. Pay them the hourly wage that most students get for part-time work for the hours they spend on the practice field and at a game or promotion work they do for the Universtity which enhances it's image. That seems the least that could be done considering how much income they bring in.

The same way they got into college!! Their grades are changed!! High schools want to win state championships as well.
The whole system is performance based and due to this blind race to WIN GAMES, has changed the real reason why student athletics was formed. Schools and Universities have turned these sports into business.
Either you address the problem by getting rid of the hypocrisy that is NCAA or you enforce the rules the way they were intended to be and clean the house.
It is embarrassing to see these so called student athletes who can't even put a whole sentence together let alone have any reading abilities. And to support these athletes as a fan just to see your school win championships is shameful and pathetic.

I dunno about that... because one of the countries top recruits in my senior year was reading mother goose stories his senior year... and he was already two years behind from where he started.
oddly I think he barely lettered in college, but he did manage to stay eligible in college.

why not be like military academies and a few others and have real student athletes?

which is indeed a part of some of the growing disconnect with college FB and BB by people who actually attended schools.

I think the entry requiremnent for athletes should be the exact same for any other student. However, any attempt to impose such a policy is met with cries of racism.

I wouldn't go that far. There is kickback but that is mainly from the athletics department and the boosters!! Fans as a whole want to see a clean program.
