I can't do London dry gins. Just not my thing.

Tanqueray has been my gin of choice for decades. I've tried lots of them and I enjoy many, but I still choose a Tank and tonic when I order a gin cocktail.
As for bourbons, I went through an intense single cask bourbon phase about 5 years ago and I tried all of the highly regarded bourbons available at the time. I found that there are many, many great bourbons out there. I liked Blanton's and that is my "go to" bourbon at this time. If I want to drop down a price point, I think Eagle Rare is an excellent choice.

I'm not a gin drinker, myself, but the wife is very partial to Beefeater.
As for bourbon, Knob Creek is probably my most frequent purchase but I will buy Woodford Reserve occasionally and I will splurge on Booker's once in a while. I recently picked up a bottle of 1835 Texas bourbon for ~$20 @ Specs and was surprised at how good it is. Having a glass right now, as a matter of fact.

Hendricks and Beefeater are good for me.
Whiskeys? Too many to choose one. But right now I have a bottle of small batch Hirsch Reserve that I'm enjoying the hell out of.

If you are mixing the gin, there is no reason to spend much.
Look at the results of the blind taste tests.
Bourbon, Scotch, etc. on the other hand...
I hate Woodford, which is one of the current hipster bourbons. I like Blanton's but I can also be happy with Beam.
I've got to try Pappy Van Winkle at some point. I am convinced the popularity is marketing. And it works. I want some!

Have you ever tried Jenever? It's the precursor to gin.
Jenever wiki
I've tried the Bols Genever and it's pretty good.

Gotta try Redbreast 12yr Irish Whiskey. It's damned near perfect.

The purpose of gin and tonic was to make the tonic(quinine water anti-malarial prevention) palatable to the Brits in their equatorial colonies.

Smooth Ambler gin was mentioned here earlier.
Asking for gin and bourbon... This gin is finished for three months in old bourbon barrels, so it gives it the darker finish. A nice gin to try, and one of the few I can handle straight up.

this & New Amsterdam are the best options for good quality & affordability. Uncle Vals, The Botonist, & Hendrick's...

For another barrel aged gin, ransom is a great product. It's an Old tom style gin.
