This was always the end game when the NFL threw out the 18 game schedule. The extra playoff game is a "compromise" that the NFLPA will be all for. Goodell is playing chess and DeMaurice Smith is playing checkers.

The 18 game schedule was simply a bargaining chip for the last CBA.
I don't think the NFLPA cares one way or another about the number of teams in the playoffs.

I actually like this, only one team gets a bye and one more team gets in, however I think seeding needs to be determined by record not division winners

Then 1 plays 4 vs 5
and 2 vs 7 plays 3 vs 6

That seems the fair way.
Unless you want:
1 bye
6 plays 7
2 plays 5
3 plays 4
1 plays winner of 6 and 7
That gives 1 too much advantage.
2 plays 7
3 plays 6
4 plays 5

What you said was that the NFL asked for the 18 game schedule to get the union to compromise and agree to the extra playoff game.
I didn't say that, and I don't agree with that.
