So the big question is.. what are the cigarettes of today? What are doctors endorsing today that will be revealed to be harmful for our health in the future?
Low fat/high carbohydrate diets.
More like meat and dairy. Animal products should be a luxury not the staple they have been for the last century.
Also the lowering of "normal" numbers that put people on more medications. Just in my time in Health Care. Cholesterol numbers lower. Take more statins. High BP #'s have steadily declined. now 135/85? Here's a line of pills for you. Blood glucose "normal" has dropped near 30 points in my time. Now95-100? All have a pill.
But the American answer has always been keep stuffing shite down your throat and take a pill.

I often times disregard doctors' opinions until I dig deeper. Scientists too
If you disregard doctors and scientists, who do you trust when you dig deeper? Or are you doing your own experiments?

I think some laws have changed since then.

Have been a drug rep for 15 years and can say that you are 100% correct.
The MD profession is no different that mechanic, plumber, insurance agent. Some are really good and talented, care about what they do and want to stay ahead of the curve as far as new therapies, medicines, etc. Others just want to get you in and out of their office as fast as they can so they can bill for a visit, put no thought into why they are giving you a certain medicine and many times are extremely burned out with being an MD.
If you ever have a serious diagnosis, always get a 2nd opinion.

Meds. Ever notice that almost every major new "miracle drug" is on TV two years later for a class action lawsuit?

The cat is out of the bag now, but recently Pain Pills. IMO Doctors were prescribing them WAAAAAY to willy nilly till just a few years ago.

A doctor gave my now deceased grandmother her first cigarette in the late 1940's.

I'm usually skeptical at first of reported findings and "facts". I can't always find what I'm looking for, but I try to do my own search and seek out multiple opinions.
But I get it; they all could be wrong or misguided.

Psychoactive drugs for depression and anxiety will be the cigarettes of the next generation.

Doctors can be greedy and lazy just like anyone else...this shouldn't be surprising

What has changed? Those "pain management clinics" have become legalized drug dealers for pill heads. Doctors and pharma makes a frick ton of money and they kick it back to the lawmakers assuring nothing is done to stop it.
Meanwhile pills are all over the street and we've got Nancy Grace on cnn whining that marijuana is this evil drug enslaving the country.

For one I cannot believe any form of OxyContin is still legal.

quote:I can definitely see this. My wife was put on some seriously heavy stuff as a teenager/young adult to treat her depression/mood disorders. They came with some pretty intense side effects. Extreme weight loss with some. Extreme weight gain with others. She collapsed at work while on one of the cocktails her psychiatrist had perscribed. He ended up quickly and quietly disappearing from town soon afterwards when several other patients started having similar bad interactions with the drugs he was prescribing together.

The over prescription of antibiotics since WWII is going to result in a lot of deaths in the next century. Way more than cigarettes.
Maybe there will be a reappearance of mercurochrome, merthiolate, iodine and gentian violet on the drugstore shelves as OTC products. The worked for my generation!
