Bill Cowher: Could he even be a good coach these days?

tomorrow is the 7 year anniversary of Cowher retiring from coaching. just think about how much the NFL has changed in the past 7 years. think about how many coaches have changed, on top of that
college has changed. free agency and drafting has changed. the CBA has changed.

Oh stop it, Cowher was/is the man!

Would depend on his staff. Not like he's drawing up plays or scouting guys personally.

No owner would give him the time anymore, he would have 3 years and then gone.

ok...he hasn't been around the inner circle of coaching in 7 years

I doubt he ever comes back...7 years is a long freaking time to be away from coaching. As you mentioned, the game has changed drastically

the only NFL guy i can remember doing well with that big of a gap was dick vermeil...and that was mostly mike martz (and his protoge al saunders)

One of the most overrated coaches ever

People seem to remember Cowher and Gruden to be better coaches than they really were the longer they remain away from the game. Each has attained almost legendary status. It's unwarranted IMO.

Gruden wants to coach Matt Ryan and the Falcons. If Smith shits the bed in 2014, which I don't think will happen, Gruden would land the ATL job.

Cowher inherited a mediocre to bad team in Pittsburgh.

Can you teach me the mechanics and basic of playing qb willing to pay

I honestly don't believe he has the motivation to coach an NFL team now.

With a good offensive coordinator, yes. That said, as others have mentioned, I doubt he even wants to come back at this point.

Remember when Joe Gibbs tried to come back, thinking that what worked in the 80s and early 90s would work in the 2000s?
Or Ditka's miserable failure at a comeback?
But then there's Vermeil...

If he was going to come back, he would have done it by now.

Cowher would be a good coach if Pittsburgh hired him. Cowher was really good—not the greatest ever—but his potential was maximized by a front office who has a virtuous patience that is absent in virtually all the other organizations.
