On the first day of legal weed sales, Gillette said she found retailers selling top-shelf marijuana to recreational users at prices close to $400 per ounce, not including taxes.

One dispensary was selling high-quality marijuana on Wednesday at $70 for one-eighth of an ounce — a markup from $25 for the same amount the day before, according to The Associated Press.

Bummer...Weed was a lot more cheap when it was illegal
Posted on 1/3/14 at 11:20 am to Darth_Vader
Lol thought the price was gonna drop

The initial rush will pass.
Just like the run on ammo the past 14 months.

$60 for an eighth doesn't look too bad now
Posted on 1/3/14 at 11:21 am to Darth_Vader
Well yeah...why not raise prices if the demand goes that high?
They'll probably even out once the novelty wears off (buying weed just because "omg it's legal now!") and other states legalize.

They don't have the inventory to satisfy all of the demand right now. Have regulate the supply with higher prices. Let the novelty wear off and it will come down.

400 for a oz of some high grade headies is not ridiculous. Prices will drop drastically IMO. The shite grows on trees.

For comparison, what is roughly the going price of an ounce when purchased illegally? I just found it strange that the article compared the price to that of medical marijuana, rather than the price of obtaining it illegally. Anyone happen to know how these compare?

It depends. How much do you need?

All the druggies on here said the reason legalization was needed was to bring down the cost of all illegal drugs.

$125 can get you an oz in CO.
$200 can get you an oz in LA (if you know who to call).
Street values in most states range from $50-$60 for an eighth (1/8 of an oz),putting the street value at $400-$480 for an oz.

medical marijuana,
My understanding is that medical and recreational are taxed differently and have different possession laws.

There are volume discounts

$35 an eighth a year ago in Breckenridge. Apparently in Summit County they've been allowed to grow a limited number of plants for personal use for years now.

Do I need to explain supply, demand, and risk to you?

wat?
I'm pretty sure no one was saying the reason it is needed is to bring the cost down. The reason it is needed is because of sensibility.

A decade ago, $300 was a decent price, but $350-$400 was not uncommon. $250 was about the bottom $ on an ounce. Factor in inflation and $400 an ounce today isn't that ridiculous.
