Please watch a video on what a GFCI is and use them always. I know of one teenager(would be 40 something now) that would be alive if a $15 plugin GFCI was used.

Sounds like you solved your issue but the correct fix is to have an electrician come out and run a dedicated freezer outlet. Assuming your main panel is in the garage it is relatively easy process.
