Players that sign financial aid papers.

I was listening to Hanigriff's show Friday and some guru was on there talking about loop holes in the new rule. This is the way he explained it. For example Hootie Jones signed financial aid papers with LSU and Alabama. Which locks the school into him. He is guaranteed a scholarship at which ever school he choses. He is in no way locked in to LSU or Bama. He can still go anywhere he wants, it just means that the school can't back out of their offer. It also means the school has unlimited contact with him during the dead period. I think most of us know about these parts of the new rule. Now here is what he said most ppl don't know. Now lets say Hootie decides he is going to Alabama. Instead he pay his own way for the spring semester. In the fall he enrolls on scholarship and it never counts against the 25 signing limit. They were saying that for sure this loophole would get fixed, I just found it interesting and had never heard of this.
Edit: I had forgotten that he mentioned, the player must not have taken a official visit to the school he enrolled in. This would not apply to Hootie because he took a official there.

They have to give him the scholly, but they can certainly make a recruit feel unwanted by ignoring, among other options, in order to get the recruit to pursue other options.
That is the "cooling" that people refer to

If that's true TOPS would be the greatest help to the ability to recruit. ... ever

Not to make this another Hootie thread... but he's a good example.
Is this the "blueshirt" we are hearing about? Pay the way for one semester?

That's what I am wondering. I can't remember who it was that was explaining it. It was one of the regular guys who covers LSU and is on a lot with Hanigriff. I do know that Hani and Jimmy Ott were literally shocked when he explained this loophole. They in essence said the 25 limit is null and void. A school could really take advantage of it. Of course the 85 limit is still there. But it is a way around the rule that was put into place to stop Houston Nutt from signing 40 players in one class. He said the rule was put in to allow plays to lock up a school and to stop a kid from being dropped on signing day by the school. Said it was never intended for a player to sign financial aid with multiple schools.

Yeah the only reason I brought his name up is that that he is the only one I know of that took advantage of signing financial aid papers and using this new rule. There are probably others I just haven't heard about it.

Yep that's it. This was the first I had heard about it. Would be real interested to hear imput from our recruiting board guru's on this.

This really depends on what you mean by signing limit. If you mean the limit of national letters of intent, signing financial aid papers and the like, then this is maybe true. If you mean actual initial counters (i.e. those athletes that receive institutional aid for the first time), I don't see it. There is nothing in the rules that really suggests it.
WRT the NLI, the rule, as written, pretty much states that a midyear (i.e. EE) doesn't count against the limit. However, no school in the SEC has done this over the past two years. The SEC seems to be treating NLIs and initial counters the same. But that may be due to the schools knowing the intent behind the rule and not what was actually written.
In the NCAA there is a difference between the NLI stuff and initial counter. In your example Hootie would be an initial counter when he gets the aid and it would have to fit withing the 25 for this year.

The rule- a player that signs financial papers before dec that HAS NOT taken an official visit can pay his way for summer and get a scholly in August and not count against number. Hottie took OV to bama so he counts against the 25

ive always said 25 means nothing. 85 is the number. Coaches find ways around the 25, you cant find ways around the 85.

I feel like the NCAA would not allow this at all.

That's it!!!!
I had forgotten about him mentioning that they can't have taken a official visit to the school the end up attend.

Isn't the 25 number an SEC rule (that other conference have had for a while now)? So there's no real penalties anyway?
From what I understood it was to limit the number committed where schools were 'stockpiling' commits to take them away from other schools. In the end left several kids without schollies.

That's what they were discussing. Its a loophole in the rule that was somehow missed. He said to expect it to be closed pretty quickly.
