Home from work today and it is on Spike...

Anyone else in the same boat that any time this movie is on, it is a must watch?

Goes along with the likes of Die Hard and Shawshank

That's one you can't watch on cable. Takes the fun out of it.

I really enjoy The Departed and I'm a big fan of Scorsese, Leo, Jack, etc., but IMO the acclaim for this movie is unwarranted. But that's probably because I hold it to the standard of Goodfellas and Casino, to which it falls way short IMO.

almost stole the movie. Very similar to Tom Arnold almost stealing True Lies.

Couple of more scenes, and that would have done it.

And while I put Goodfellas ahead of Casino, overall, Casino is the one I almost have to watch when I see that it is on. Casino and Shawshank.

For me The Departed>>>>>>Goodfellas. I've always thought Goodfellas was overrated, like a better version of a movie like Blow. A relatively simple glorification of drugs and violence. Casino I've honestly only seen probably twice and remember enjoying it but nothing sticking out. Need to watch it again.

I think alot of it is the fact that I was too young to have seen Goodfellas when it came out. I imagine the mafia/wiseguy plot was much fresher back then.

Casino is fun but as the main character's relationships deteriorate the movie kinda falls apart.

For me The Departed > Goodfellas > Casino.

But Goodfellas and Casino deserve special recognition for being based on true stories. The Departed is loosely based on Whitey Bulger and a story that was written by a Japanese Crime writer(I think).

No shot. The Departed has several deficiencies, from the gaping plot holes, cheesy aspects (the Costello exchange with the Chinese), to the sloppy editing where portions of the dialogue were changed from the character clearly saying "F*ck" to something else because the film had the word "F*ck" too many times.

The Departed is good, but it's nowhere near a classic on the level of Scorsese's prior works.

When's the last time you saw it? It's free on Amazon Prime Instant in HD. I watch it whenever I can. That movie is so great, The Departed doesn't even come close.

But that's not putting The Departed down in any way. It's just not on the same level.
