It makes no sense to wait, by either party till after the bowl games to announce. You are asking a coach to perpetuate a lie for several weeks, much less keep it a secret. If they are still negotiating/putting out new feelers that is different. But if anyone thinks saban is already on board with UT they might also think Obama is the messiah.

They need a dictator, not a committee. I know from sitting in a room with attorneys all the time....
1 person things get done quick.
2 to 3 people ideas are shared, things get done.
4 to 5 takes longer but things slowly get done.
6 and above, chaos

There aren't that many coaches. Doesn't make sense for there to be a committee when there are what 120 teams and say only HC, DC, and OC are reasonable HC hires for Texas, so 360 people. When fortune 500 companies are forming search committees there could be 5 execs at every fortune 500 company to consider at least.. what a waste of time.

Nick wants everything kept quiet so he can focus on the Sugar Bowl before leaving Gumpville.

I think you are being sarcastic but not sure. Nick staying to coach the sugar bowl and then bolting is highly unlikely. But it would be interesting around here if that happened.

When committees are formed nothing gets done. For a shining example of this axiom, look no further than Capitol Hill.

If the committee is merely an administrative puppet to get around the restrictions on hiring Todd Graham from ASU, then there would be some logic behind it. Otherwise, this committee seems like a bad idea.
What are the chances that is the case?

I don't want to totally back off my stance from a week ago when I was 70/30 Saban leaving so I'm trying to see his behavior from the leaving for Texas perspective. I'm just having a hard time seeing the logic of a coach who has apparently been working back channels to leave for Texas even before the regular season staying on to coach the bowl game and THEN leave. I think it could still happen but this week (Dec 16-Dec 22) is by far the most logical time for a move to be made. Mack is now gone and there is no reason to delay an announcement especially from Saban's standpoint. He'd be far better off leaving now during the dead period and allowing Kirby Smart the opportunity as the interim coach for the Sugar Bowl. Waiting until January to leave makes his departure unnecessarily worse than leaving now.

it wasn't stupidity, its literally just reading the tea leaves, you should know better than anyone applying logic to texas is pointless..
Well at least one way to read them.
I read it as the one sure-fire hire is gone, so the new AD wants some political cover in case plan B (which hasn't been decided yet or it would have leaked given the history of this process) doesn't work out.
This same committee is basically the people that not only hired Patterson, but also helped Powers keep his job. This could very well be a reward of access for their support.
Personally I love the committee approach, as it ensures that less-than-desirable but talented coaches won't get a shot.
-Chip Kelly is out for the sanctions
-Franklin is out because of the rape charge (too close to home for Texas)
-Strong is out because of not enough experience with actual students
-Briles is out because he is not a good politician
-Les or Gundy is out because of the recent OSU scandal
-etc
I think this means the hire will either be HUGE (so like a Harbaugh) or someone no one is currently considering.

quote:Don't know who chatsports is or what kind of credibility they have, but think about the timing. Saban was supposedly a done deal prior to Mack stepping down, but because of a 4 day delay, Saban turns down $140 million, only to suggest they delay the announcement another 2.5 weeks so he can coach the bowl. I call total BS.
Read this:
Don't get me wrong, I would love to Saban go to UT but none of this makes sense to me.

The whole "middle finger" aspect of it is why waiting until January 3rd makes no sense. Unless Saban has all this pent up frustration with Alabama that he has kept hidden and wants to stick it to us waiting to leave isn't logical. I'd be less suprised if Saban pulled an Urban Meyer after the bowl game and "retired" than I would if he waited until January to leave for Texas.

This committee was not formed to hire a coach, it was formed to fight Joe Jamail. They have to neutralize Jamail before Patterson can progress on placing the new coach. Jamail stopped the Saban hire to establish his control and will do it again if the Texas regents (i.e., the 'Committee') don't gang up on him and win this fight.
It's politics, not football.

This is the first I've heard of Jamail stopping the Saban hire. If true, what a moron.

it's very much politics but Joe Jamail is not the enemy

Why the committee of the Golden Eight, none of which has a football background? What is their true purpose? Who benefits from the inherent delay of a committee?
Watch the Texas media in the next few days. The mud will fly. The Hicks Brothers vs. Joe Jamail, with neither side giving a shite about the University of Texas.
Posted on 12/19/13 at 2:02 pm to Coeur du Tigre
while I certainly appreciate a good conspiracy, the Hicks and Jamail are not enemies. The politics have been ongoing and there are many factions. But this is Bill Powers's committee (it's essentially the same group as the one he and Dodds used to hire Patterson).
If you want to watch fur fly, Regent Wallace Hall's impeachment hearing began yesterday.

Some of you forget who Saban really is. He will do what HE wants when HE wants. He doesn't give two shits about anyone else except Ms. Terri. If she wants to go to Austin.........HE GONE.
