Seriously though, Monty is lasting the entire season. There is no benefit to firing him in season unless things go so sideways you decide to go for the tank.
The only way firing Monty midseason would benefit the Pelicans would be to hire Phil Jackson in his place.

Not sure why the extreme positions are the only ones acknowledged.
Make changes to the staff before firing Monty if on the court performance is believed to be consistently behind where it should be at this point in the season.
I am not sure it is, actually.

What changes to the staff would help though? Unless Monty plans to try a new defense, what's the point of getting a new defensive minded coach. And if you bring in an offensive minded coach, the team is already pretty good in that area. It'd be great if adding the right assistant could help the players execute better, but the assistants we have now seem to be pretty decent. I just don't see Monty bringing in a new assistant for the purposes of making significant scheme changes, and that seems like the only thing that would make much difference.

Yep.
Close loss, blowout, injuries, competition, location dont matter. Pitchforks are out. Often cliched, general critiques claiming Monty always does XYZ and is the only thing holding this roster back from competing for a playoff spot (which they are doing and are in position to do)
Its a race to see who can be right about a mediocre team being mediocre. Its all so miserable.

I'm not trying to start and argument but only give my opinion of the team which ultimately falls on the coach (which sucks bc i do like Monty, i think he's a great players coach and he has the respect of his players)..however,
We are very inconsistent on the offensive side of the ball…and I'm not talking about making/missing shots. Im talking about plays being run with flow, sharpness, etc…we come down and have a couple run offs (attempts to screen) and that's about it…then guys are just standing around until one of them jacks it up.
The screens that we try to set are terrible. We basically run right by the defender without freeing up our player whatsoever. By this time, its getting late in the shot clock and we chunk one or someone has to go one-on one. Tough to keep up when this is your offense.
It's also tough to run down and play solid D after having continuous bad trips on the offensive side of the ball. I know this sounds dumb, BUT its very frustrating to put together a few stops on D and then have them squandered on the offensive side.
When you watch other teams play (Spurs for example, since this is who we're striving to be like), their plays and offense, as a whole, is ran very smoothly. Everyone knows where to be, who to go screen (and set a good one), and when to shoot it bc…well…I'm open!
I'm just giving my opinion…not hating on Monty bc I do like him. But something's gotta change on O..it tough to watch. And there is a difference between watching a team run a good offense and not make shots compared to watching an offense that looks completely lost. You can even see it on the players faces after a while..frustrated.

Somebody is gonna give you the Pelicans offensive ranking. I promise you.
Posted on 12/20/13 at 11:14 am to Gtothemoney
The Pelicans' offensive success has been inconsistent at best and has more to do with individual play than it does with scheme or coaching. Guys have great nights here and there and sometimes turnovers turn into a ton of points.
The fact remains that the Pelicans' while 11th in offensive scoring this season are 27th (or 4th to last) in the league in scoring defense.
Their team defense is horrible, their individual defense is mediocre to bad with a few exceptions.
They have not won a single game against a team that is 0.500 or better this season, but they've beaten a bunch of mediocre to bad teams.
You see sparks of what this team could be, but overall they look poorly coached and unorganized. That falls entirely on Monty and has been the case for 2.5 years now. This is whether he's had talent or not on the team.

Agreed. Couple that with my above post about the offensive woes = lost, confused & frustrated basketball team. Ultimately, this has to fall on someone.

Two two things that kill me the most are the open 3s (especially to teams/players that everyone knows can do damage behind the arc), and the terrible pick and roll defense. It makes no sense being that 3 of our starts are considered above average defensively (Jrue, Aminu, and Davis), and Gordon is considered a pretty decent defender himself.

Monty has said over and over "We are a help defense team." Now, what he likely means to say is, "Ideally, we are a help defense team, but we are not helping effectively at the moment."
If the coaches that actually spend time one-on-one with players do not get the concepts well enough or can't communicate them well enough, then they need to go.
The guy knows what he wants and know that leaving open 3 point shooters at a high rate is simply unacceptable, but if the guys do not execute well, then something has to change. That could be the demands (so Monty or his expectations), the players, or method of implementation (part of which is the staff).

I agree with you 42. I think Monty needs to do a better job of using his players' skillsets. Look at SA, they were down Duncan, Parker, and Manu last night, but Pop was able to find a way to win with what he had.

Which is problematic and a horrible philosophy to go by. I understand help defense being a key cog in strategy, but if the Pelicans are going to be this bad at defense, they should've just hired D'antoni to coach this team. At least his teams have some semblance of offensive creativity and structure.

When this has been a problem for 3-4 years now with the player overhauls this roster has had, then it points to poor coaching at the top. Fact is that this team is poorly coached. PERIOD. It is treading water based on talent alone.
Monty is simply a bad coach right now. He has potential, but isn't ready to handle this situation. He lucked into a great situation his first year, much like Trent Johnson did at LSU, and has been horrible since.

George Karl, per ESPN today:
quote:
Q: Which young player has opened your eyes this season?
quote:
Karl: Anthony Davis has been most impressive. He's a big man with savvy and is on the verge being a "quad-double" guy. But Ty Lawson has also shown how he's grown offensively. He has even more offensive freedom than he had under me, so he's taken more shots but remained efficient. He's also playing even better defense than last season.

He just can't stop obsessing. I will be pretty pissed if Monty gets one more year. If he survives for several more because he turns the corner then fine, but one more year of patiently treading water isn't worth passing up a quality coach that wouldn't be coming here for a paycheck but because he has a passion for the roster. Demps has to be intrigued by Karl's interest in his roster too. Getting Karl in backing Demps' moves could easily give him another 2-3 years of job security where if he sticks with Monty 1 more year they both could be on their way out.
