re: Worst bowl game to go to, from the perspective of the player

My friend on Buffalo is playing in Boise for his bowl game. He keeps jokingly tweeting about playing for the potatoes and all that. He doesn't seem to mind all that much, though it is a MAC school.

They used to have a bowl game in Detroit didn't they? Isn't it amazing that an urban blight bowl wasn't a bigger hit?

Little Caeser's Bowl is still there

Each bowl is different. For the Fiesta Bowl we did NOTHING as a team except go to Fogo de Chao one night for dinner.

But for the Rose Bowl they had something for us to do every day we were there.
Your posts are interesting.
It's not though surprising that some of the "best or worst" bowls from players' perspectives probably have more to do with the organization of entertainment than the specific city.
I toured a lot with music when I was younger and some of the best times I had were in the most unlikely places and more boring times were in the most famous touristic cities.

Our worst nightmare would have been playing in a bowl game in our own city/stadium. If BYU beats Utah in 2008 we would have played in the Armed Forces Bowl right in Fort Worth. We all feared it. SMU had to play in their own stadium in 2010 and I knew a guy who played for them and they all hated it.
The worst bowl game is definitely one in your own stadium/city. Part of the fun was experiencing a different city and seeing what they had to offer entertainment wise.
Poinsettia Bowl/Fiesta Bowl were great and fun in their own rights but the Rose Bowl was just above and beyond, I doubt there is a better bowl experience. They spared no expense.
One good thing about the Fiesta Bowl though was the staff. They had "servants", literally. They wore these yellow jackets and if you needed anything they would do it. For example I left my camera at the hotel we had breakfast at one morning and they tracked it down and had it back to me later that day.

Did they put you guys at the Fairmont Princess or Scottsdale Plaza Resort? I had a friend on the Oregon teams that were here for the National Championship and last year's Fiesta Bowl and spent some time hanging out up there and it is pretty sweet.
ETA: Me and my buddies in town for the game had more fun than the players at the hotel since we just went to the outdoor bar when they had team related stuff to do.

Went with Kentucky to the Peach Bowl in 93, I was a student athletic trainer.
Swag we got:
Nike Peach Bowl warm up
Peach Bowl Hat
Citizen Gold Peach Bowl Watch
Ring
Starter Kentucky Peach Bowl Jacket
Peach Bowl Shirt
We were given $80/day spending money
They took us to Hooters for both teams (UK/Clemson)
Team banquet with both teams in the Marriott
Even though we lost…(my friend Marty Moore fumbled after int. a pass in the last 1:30 of the game with the lead….I had a blast. Running out of the tunnel with the team out in the Georgia Dome with the UK crowd was a great feeling.

Princess, it was a nice resort but horrible for security as the rooms are only 1 or 2 stories. Really easy for people to sneak out. We had a bunch of guys sneak out the night before the game and roll back into the property in cabs the next morning... shame because we ended up playing poorly in the game.
For the Rose Bowl our coaches cracked down on that and posted security guards at every exit for overnight watch. We stayed at the JW Marriott by the Staples Center for the Rose Bowl and they sent home some guys on a Greyhound for breaking curfew and coming back in at 5am.

The new trend for bowl gifts is a copout, seems like each bowl is doing a "gift suite", where they just give you $400 or so to spend on a variety of gifts like electronics. I'd rather it go back to where each bowl had unique gifts.
Poinsettia Bowl we got an iPod Touch, and a Best Buy Gift Card.
But Fiesta/Rose Bowl were the gift suite. I used my points for the Fiesta Bowl to get a PS3 and the points for the Rose Bowl to get a recliner chair.
I don't think the bowl game specific gear/apparel count toward the $500 limit though. We got plenty of that apart from the gift suite.

Don't forget…this was back in 1993….way before the swag. Hell, we thought getting a watch was awesome.
I know a couple of OL guys for UK…they have been to 4 bowls/row with UK…they got a bunch of stuff (Music City/Liberty)…they got Best Buy gift certificates, Oakley sunglasses, Backpacks, iPods, etc.
Seems the swag for the bowl games today is a hell a lot better then what was given out 15 years ago.

Detroit is blighted but it's a fun city despite that.

I graduated from TCU in Spring 2011. Let me guess you went to Martin HS?

I went to Oakridge, lived in the Martin district all my life though.
Most of my friends went there, Devonte used to show up at our parties pretty small community

I knew some guys who went to Oakridge, surprised they are in SPC though, SPC has some really really rich schools while Oakridge(at least to me) seemed only really rich. Not really really rich.
High School I went to... will keep that secret otherwise people could look me up. Wasn't too far from Martin HS though, we played them in HS in every sport.

we we're always the red headed step child of the conference. There's definitely money there, just not as much in comparison. We're also one of the younger schools in the conference. We were much better suited for 2A or 3A TAPPS. Honestly SPC sucked I hated never having real playoffs. And I'm pretty sure if you revealed your skin color I could make an educated guess

My cousin played for an SPC school and their playoffs were stupid. Especially in basketball, they would all gather at Greenhill and have an "A" tournament and "B" tournament. Gotta give everyone a trophy I guess. Have an 8 team tournament over the span of 2 days. I would always go though
I am white though the high school I went to was an even 25-25-25-25 in White, Black, Mexican, and Other.

Yeah I mean it was dumb but the "b" bracket was really just to get more teams there to keep playing i.e. make more money for the host school. Winning division 2 was really 9th place
We we're pretty stacked in basketball when Chris Babb and Ross Apo played.
Is it an Arlington school or Mansfield?
