Also, the second never played the main "Dwarves, Misty Mountains Cold" theme that was the main theme in the first one. I liked that theme, sucks they didn't play it.

I thought the movie was solid. I was really impressed with it. The acting is great and Jackson is doing a really good job. It's the second movie in a Jackson trilogy. I went in expecting half the movie to be bad arse action and half the movie to be ending set up and a cliffhanger.
If you expected anything else or were disappointed in how he handled that you're an idiot. You knew it was going to be a trilogy and you knew he wasn't going to do a shot for shot remake of the book. If that's what you're upset about why did you even see the move? Nitpicking critic douches.
I loved the movie. Good mix of humor, drama, action, cheesy action. Sauran and Smaug in the same movie? Awesome.
Those who think Jackson is deviating too far from the source material aren't nerded out on Middle Earth Mythos.

I was very disappointed. I didn't like the cliffhanger. It just didn't feel the same as any other film in the series. It dragged greatly and so much could have been cut. The hobbit could easily have been fit into two flicks.
Way, way too much filler.
Smaug was great, though.
And I am a huge LOTR fan. This one was the weakest of all five. By far.
Hoping the final is better. I don't see how it can't be.
I agree with all of this with my caveat being that the filler is so excessive that when Smaug finally appeared I was burnt out to the point that the movie could barely hld my attention. This film upset me so much I will likely not go to see the final one in the theater. Jackson could have still milked the Hobbit into three movies and left all of the additional non book crap out. Very dissapointing.

Yeah, why would anyone want a movie to be like the book it was made from?

I also liked that we learned more about dwarf culture in this film.

Lots of DOS felt completely like filler and unnecessary
fricking this. Though I love ME so much that it didn't bother me but my only real complaint, or big one, was the editing in the final act. Mountain/lake town/mountain/lake town/mountain/lake town
Nothing really exceptional should've been going on in lake town. The orcs/lake town shouldn't have even been in the film
The erebor stuff was over the top with the perpetual jumping on chains, and sliding
still, while I like them and will watchtower hem endlessly, they aren't in the same stratosphere as the LotR
IMO Smaug has a palantir

Where you think that the second trilogy is good. Just missing something that the original one had
Too much emphasis on cgi. The original trilogy blended every movie making trick perfectly. It felt real. There was no dancing over dwarves head crossing a river and the cartoonish matrix stuff in erebor
When legolas takes down the oliphant, it's awesome because in that 1:00 they get to showcase how incredible he is, it feels special. These movies have a pirates of the Caribbean "over the top" thing going on.
Still love them. It's a cash grab, but at least they're not shitting all over the first 3...ahem, George lucas

Individual scenes were great...but strung together this movie is a mess
I wouldn't say tedious, but the editing sucks. Big time in the final act

Oh, and I hate that they start the movie with "Bree on the edge of the shire" the prancing pony sign was enough. Secondly, "12 months later"
Compare this to the opening of "return of the king"

Saw this in IMAX 3D last night.
I was thoroughly entertained. I can't wait for the next one.

Went and saw this last night. My thoughts-
It's entertaining, but nowhere near the level of LOTR. They've really messed up some stuff. Specifically-
Orcs. I know it was said about the 1st movie too, but it bears repeating. Why in the hell do we need orcs in every scene? It totally changes the story, and it also contradicts both Tolkein and the first trilogy's own internal logic. First off, these guys are bigger than the Uruk-Hai (Saruman's special blend), and they're attacking in daylight all the time. The Uruk-Hai were supposed to be so fearsome because they were the 1st orcs doing this; instead we have Azog and his crew, 60 years beforehand, and even more capable. Makes no sense.
Secondly, if the orcs ARE ravaging around in open sight everywhere, it makes the intra-species rivalries that much more ... stupid. Orc raiding parties directly into Esgaroth, and at Thranduil's back door- this should have prompted something immediately. Yeah, I know there are newly forged alliances after the Battle of the Five Armies (next movie), or are at least supposed to be... but there is supposed to be a near-battle between Elves, Dwarves and Men before the goblins/orcs attack. Well, since they are already attacking, - like I said, the near-miss battle is going to be stupid. Even given the Dwarves' arrogance after retaking Erebor, the threat from the Orcs should be enough to submerge any other, internal conflicts.

After reading this thread, I'm not sure if many of the posters on this board are too picky or if I'm not picky enough.
The only thing for certain is we all need to get laid.

I honestly didnt care for the addition of Sauron to the Hobbit movies.
Yeah you're right... why put in the main villain of the whole fricking series?

Saw it in theaters last night. Maybe I was tired, but I just felt this film was far inferior to last year's.
I give it a B-.
The only really big bright spot was Benedict Cumberbatch's vocal performance as Smaug. He stole the show IMHO.
