Guess we are pulling for Auburn if you want the Cotton Bowl
Per Times-Pic

quote:
Should Missouri beat Auburn in Atlanta and most likely snag the Sugar Bowl spot, and the Capital One swim upstream and select South Carolina, that would leave Alabama and Auburn in likely contention for an at-large BCS spot. Whichever team is left over would almost certainly get an invite from the Cotton Bowl over LSU.
The likelihood of the second part of the scenario seems negligible. The Capital One tends to invite the highest ranked SEC team not headed to a BCS game. The variable would be if current No. 3 Auburn or current No. 5 Mizzou would dip below current No. 8 South Carolina in the rankings.
Should Carolina be the pick for the Capital One and Alabama and Auburn remain on the table for the Cotton, the next bowl in the pecking order would the Chick-fil-A Bowl in Atlanta on New Year's Eve.
However, it's likely LSU officials would work with the SEC to avoid a second straight trip to Atlanta after a dismal turnout last season. Texas A&M would be a logical fit for the Chick-fil-A, and should that strange series of events come to fruition, the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville on Jan. 1 would be a perfect landing spot for the Tigers - potentially against Michigan or Nebraska.

From the Advocate, clearing up the "safety net" rule.

In a rule put in place after a 10-2 LSU team was in danger of tumbling far down the SEC’s bowl pecking order after losing the 2005 SEC Championship Game, the SEC requires the Cap One, Cotton, Outback and Chick-fil-A to rotate being the so-called “safety-net” bowl for the championship game loser. This year, the Cotton Bowl is contractually obligated to fill that role. That means it would be required to take the Auburn-Missouri loser if that team is passed over by the BCS bowls, the Cap One and, in Missouri’s case, the Outback. Such a scenario would possibly send LSU to the Outback, the Gator (also Jan. 1 in Jacksonville, Fla.) or back to the Dec. 31 Chick-fil-A in Atlanta. It’s also possible the Cotton would pair Texas A&M against longtime rival Texas, but that also appears as unlikely as the SEC getting just one BCS bowl team. Texas could be one of several Big 12 teams in the Cotton mix, along with Baylor, Oklahoma State and Oklahoma.

There is zero chance that Bama would stay ahead of Mizzou in that scenario. Nearly all of the human votes would go to Missouri.

That has to be a projection for the Cotton not proof of an invite. No way Baylor is locked into the Cotton Bowl; if they beat Texas they have a great shot at a BCS bowl.

Baylor beats Texas. So should be LSU/Texas in Cotton.

lsumatt, what is your feeling on the Cotton Bowl chances today?
I'm starting to think that the Cotton may have Missouri and Auburn ahead of LSU; which effectively pushes our Tigers to the Chicken/Outback/Gator bowls.
Looking back at your predictions, I'd go with:
60% Gator, 30% Chicken, 5% Cotton, 5% Outback

First I am thinking the Cap One could (maybe 50/50) take Auburn over SC, which is ideal. That sends SC to Outback and basically locks up Cotton for LSU, but I think they jump on SC over Mizzou.
If Cap One did pass on Auburn for SC, the Cotton could take Auburn (actually forced to by the safety net rule) and then the Outback LSU. The Cotton would be fine with that, but I wonder if some back room deals don't go one to put Auburn in the Outback and LSU in the Cotton - that makes more sense geographically.
If Mizzou loses Saturday and gets passed up by the Cap One, the Outback gets them if the want and usually they wouldn't blink at an 11-2 SEC East team. But Mizzou is so far away, they could pass on them sending Mizzou to Cotton. I am also worried the Outback takes 8-4 Georgia over LSU, sending us to the Chicken or Gator.
The real wrench in all of this is that Auburn is a west school and about as east as you can get and Mizzou is an east school and about as west as you can get.

lsu matt- Why would Brad Edwards project LSU to Cotton as he has Auburn to Sugar and Mizzou to Outback. Does he not understand the rules of the SEC that the Cotton must take the sec game loser??
There is no rule for this according to dallasnews.com. The Cotton selects an at-large SEC team. What happened last season was the result of Georgia going to the Cap One which they were in jeopardy of missing. Saban's T.V. request last season caused the SEC to go into action to fix the issue. The Cotton ended up with Texas A&M last season, not the SECCG loser.
Cotton Bowl / January 3 / AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas / Bowl tie-ins: SEC at large vs. Big 12 No. 2 / Carlton’s projection: LSU/South Carolina vs. Baylor. The SEC selection basically comes down to whoever the Cotton Bowl wants more. Baylor’s last Cotton Bowl appearance came in 1974, when it lost to Penn State, 41-20.

and then the Outback LSU
I like this. But against who??? MSU if they lose to OSU?????? Not wisky for sure since they open the season next year right??? What other Big 10 team is there???? Doesn't the Cap -one have the 1st pick of a non BCS big10 team????

I don't see this happening. LSU hasn't been to the Outback for so long and has an exciting team. UGA doesn't have Murray and it looks like either the Chicken bowl or the Gator for them with A & M going where UGA doesn't.

Would our fans travel to the Outback or Cotton Bowls? I would think so, but who knows for sure.
