He 100% DID NOT know the rules. There is no question about it. Look at his quote.

"I didn't hit him with my hand or my helmet," Brooks said"

What more proof do you actually need to see that the player was completely 100% ignorant of the rule he violated?

quote:

In covering the passer position, Referees will be particularly alert to fouls in which defenders impermissibly use the helmet and/or facemask to hit the passer, or use hands, arms, or other parts of the body to hit the passer forcibly in the head or neck area (see also the other unnecessary roughness rules covering these subjects). A defensive player must not use his helmet against a passer who is in a defenseless posture — for example, (1) forcibly hitting the passer’s head or neck area with the helmet or facemask, even if the initial contact of the defender’s helmet or facemask is lower than the passer’s neck, and regardless of whether the defensive player also uses his arms to tackle the passer by encircling or grasping him; or (2) lowering the head and making forcible contact with the top/crown or forehead/?hairline? parts of the helmet against any part of the passer’s body. This rule does not prohibit incidental contact by the mask or non-crown parts of the helmet in the course of a conventional tackle on a passer.

How can you think the man knows the rule when he goes to defend himself and he asserts something that wasnt even the basis for the call?

"I didn't hit him with my hand or my helmet," Brooks said"

That should end all discussion on that matter. He knows part of a rule but obviously didnt know he cant hit the QB in the neck area with ANY part of his body.

It's okay, man, the Saints won. It's really going to be fine. Let's go get some ice cream.

yeah, that was a facemask too.

while i agree it was roughing, wouldnt the facemask have occurred AFTER the fumble, which wouldnt have saved the turnover?

The fumble doesn’t change possession in itself. The facemask would have to occur AFTER the possession has clearly changed. Brees was already on the ground before the 49ers picked up the ball. If facemask would have been called then it would have been saints ball.

Too many people focused on the arm across chest/neck.
This shows shoulder pad to helmet hit. Brees' helmet is moving towards his back left due to the shoulder pad impact.

Corey White catching a pick and being contacted but not ruled down on the fumble out of the end zone? Even Mike Pereira (sp) said he was down by contact if he had to make the call under the hood.

".. Poisoning the well

It's pretty impressive to cram 3 logical fallacies into one compound sentence.

definitely only hit the chest as harbaugh & kaep were screaming

The QB protection issue has evolved to the point where the first thing i look for is a flag on ANY QB hit. The NFL might be better served (and I don't doubt we may see) it just become a No Tackling QB Rule. You can touch them between the knees and pads- outside of that... flag. Tackle them at all flag. Or maybe just put a flag on them. Pull the flag out of their waist and get a 5yd sack.

As much as I dislike this evolution, having a sub 6' QB makes these rules benefit us as much or more as any other team.

It was borderline but because it's Drew Brees, It was called. Same would've happened for about 4-5 other QBs

Brees does not get many roughing penalties called.

If that's the case then why is Brees never near the top of the league in roughing calls or personal fouls?

No problem. That is assuming those numbers are correct, though.
