fricking BOOM! This is the best post I have seen in recent memory.

In covering the passer position, Referees will be particularly alert to fouls in which defenders impermissibly use the helmet and/or facemask to hit the passer, or use hands, arms, or other parts of the body to hit the passer forcibly in the head or neck area (see also the other unnecessary roughness rules covering these subjects). A defensive player must not use his helmet against a passer who is in a defenseless posture — for example, (1) forcibly hitting the passer’s head or neck area with the helmet or facemask, even if the initial contact of the defender’s helmet or facemask is lower than the passer’s neck, and regardless of whether the defensive player also uses his arms to tackle the passer by encircling or grasping him; or (2) lowering the head and making forcible contact with the top/crown or forehead/?hairline? parts of the helmet against any part of the passer’s body. This rule does not prohibit incidental contact by the mask or non-crown parts of the helmet in the course of a conventional tackle on a passer.
it's more fun to ignore the rules and have a made up controversy than it is to actually read.

He was hit in the neck, not the face. It depends on how you interpret the rule, if the neck is fair game or not. His head wrenched back because of the force of the hit around his neck, and the ref saw that thinking his head was involved because it moved. He was NOT hit in the head.

Yeah, we aren't arguing that...We are arguing that getting lined in the neck by an arm is not allowed. The neck area is off limits

Too many people focused on the arm across chest/neck.
This shows shoulder pad to helmet hit. Brees' helmet is moving towards his back left due to the shoulder pad impact.

This is not a controversial call at all. This is a plain black and white call. The initial hit wasn't why they threw the flag. The reason they threw the flag was because Brooks tried to rip his helmet off his head. He was all over the face mask and helmet after the initial impact.
In the 80's and 90's this would have been a routine hit on the QB resulting in a fumble. The NFL rules have changed.
The 49ers get the benefit of the doubt all the time (so do the Patriots). We are always on the wrong end of these type calls. What comes around goes around. Suck it up crybaby 49ers. Your QB played like shite and couldn't put up more than 3 points without the gift turnovers we gave you. They had the ball 2 more times after this hit and didn't do shite with the football. Without our mistakes, we dominate them. The call was the right call. Play by the rules or reap the consequences. frick the 49ers.

no interpretation needed. The neck is not fair game

neck isn't fair game. when is the play flagged, during the takedown or during the first hit?

Remember the legal hit Bobby McCray put on curt Warner in the playoff game? That was legal and was shown repeatedly as "evidence"
for a Bounty Scandal. How does a team like the 9ers get away with moaning so long after game? The rule is clear.
