Agreed. I can leave all the doors unlocked and not worry at all because my dog is a nightmare.

Why so many posts against pistol grips?

I love the pistol grip on my 870. Also makes for much better control of the weapon with one hand if you need to use your off hand for something.

Those are all great suggestions but I would also suggest getting a dog. If a thief sees a dog they will probably just move to the next house without one.

Yep, forgot about a pooch or two. I have two running out in my yard. Catahoula Curs. When a stranger pulls up, they raise a huge ruckus.

I think most of them meant that a shotgun without a stock and a pistol grip is extremely hard to shoot, which I totally agree with. But I also think a shotgun with a stock and a pistol grip work better for me as well.

Wingmaster with 18.5 barrel is sweet. Keep it simple without all the tacticool gear.

Thank you, sir!

The accessories cost about 2/3 of the original cost so I'm glad it all panned out well and is fun to shoot.

I want to buy a tactical pump action twelve gauge with a pistol grip combo for home protection.

I would get the military style, pistol grip, traditional stock combo, or perhaps even a pistol grip/folding stock combo - because you never know what you're going to prefer.

I recommend a Mossberg 500 or 590. That is going to be a good place to start, less costly than a 870 (the "other" 12-gauge defense standard) and an 18" to 20" barrel. You want a high capacity tube, but there are so many aftermarket options to change later, that is not critical. I think 7 or 8 is about standard for this platform.

Don't overaccessorize at first, but for a Mossberg 500/590, there are virtually unlimited accessories from which to choose (as there are also for the 870 Police series), it is very much the defense shotgun version of the Ruger 10/22 or AR-15, from a ubiquity and accessory standpoint.

Lots of good suggestion. I agree w/ those recommending you to take a class and get some formal training. And the gun doesn't have to be "tactical" to be effective.

As far as home defense guns go, the 12 gauge shotgun is the most effective. OTOH, if there's any chance someone smaller than you might end up handling the gun, I'd suggest considering a youth model 20 gauge pump shotgun. There are a number of good ones out there, but I've bought the Marlin in the past for this purpose. A pump 20 gauge is still a VERY formidable weapon and will be easier to most w/ small stature or the less experienced to handle.

I have a Benelli Supernova Tactical. I can't complain. It find it is easier to clean than a Remington and the polymer finishes on the Benelli don't rust as easily. I have had no issues with mine whatsoever.

For the record, this isn't a picture of mine.
