Nova aka Northern VA is easy 7 hours away
Dude, I'm from that area and have made the drive up 81 from Bristol to DC countless times. I guess you could stretch it to 7 hours if you're drive like Grandma and piss like Grandpa, but it's an easy 6 hour drive - and can be done in 5 1/2 to 5:45 if you push it and don't stop much.

A lot of major CFB programs are struggling with fan support right now...
I don't know how the hell they get 160k to show up when teams can't even fill their own capacity on most Saturdays.

6, 7 at this point we are splitting hairs, but if you don't live west of manassas off of 66 there is no telling how long it will take just to get to 81, and 81 fricking blows with all the semis doing 50 in the left lane up a hill... Pretty drive though.
Even with the novelty of it all they shouldn't get much more than 100K. It's going to be an expensive ticket and a bad bad seat. Will make the uppers in Jerry World feel like lower bowl seats.

Bristol, VA is further away from DC than Pittsburgh
it's about the same distance away as Columbus, OH
frick that noise. I doubt people from around here will be going down for that

I think this game will be popular with the fan bases due to the novelty, even if the actual game-watching experience sucks. They only need around 115,000 to break the college football record and I could definitely see them hitting that.

Bristol is pretty much the exact spot where the UT fan base starts changing into Va Tech Fan base. The kids that go to school there are pretty much split on which team they like. (Probably more-so for Va tech now that UT is pretty bad the past 5 years or so.) They will fill that place easily as both fan bases have been wanting something like this forever and the novelty of it would make it happen.

You don't think people will go for the novelty so they can say they were there.

If any of these pictures being posted are to scale, then over 1/2 of the seats look to be at least 100+ yards from the damn field. No way in hell I would pay to watch a game (regardless of who's playing), novelty or not. And doesn't the place only hold like 165k-170k? So if they get as many people as they are projecting, then you are going to have people in the nosebleed turn (endzone, I guess?) seats 150-200 yards from the field.

Didn't realize how close these two schools were in proximity

The track is over 900 yards long; unless they are putting temporary stands on the track and around the field…everyone is going to need a strong pair of binoculars.

Anyone who looks at this and still thinks this is A) a good idea and B) that they will have 160k fans there is a fricking moron.
And I'm sure the players will enjoy the thin layer of field turf on top of the asphalt.

And that's a short track. Imagine what Talladega would look like.
Hell, I figured the same thing with Hockey and baseball stadiums but it seems to be a success.

This is fricking awesome, I wish LSU was in the game

poor UT....has it come to this?
Posted on 10/10/13 at 8:40 am to BilJ
I'm surprised that so many in this thread are unaware of the fact UT and VT have been trying to get this done for years. Both can bases are excited about this. Only inclement weather will keep this from being a capacity crowd.

Tenn back in the 90's would have sold it out.
You would think the costs and logistics would be difficult to handle something like that.

So I measured in Google Earth how far away the northern most seat and western most seat would be from midfield. It was about 860' and 570'. So to put that in perspective in Tiger Stadium you would be sitting on top of the PMAC or in the middle of the W stadium parking lot. Awesome.
