I've always been curious about some of the older LSU games from the Saban era. Thanks for posting about this one
Saban almost lost us the game. Skylar green and mauck won it for us

his one was probably the turning point for our tigers to become elite.
I've always felt like the 2001 Auburn game (had the privilege to sit in the middle of the barners section which was great) that was rescheduled from an early season SEC matchup to the last SEC game due to the 911 attacks was our first big signature win. It was winner take all for the SEC West and put us in the SECCG for the first time - which we turned into an upset of #2 (I think) Tennessee to win the SECC for the first time in forever and then annihilated Illinois in the Sugar Bowl for our first ever BCS Bowl win.
I still think that team could have beaten anyone in the nation the way they were clicking on offense at the end of the year!!!!

That really was a great game in 03, just watched the highlights
And agree with others. 2001 was the year that showed what the program could become

I was sitting right behind a bunch of Ga fans, I have still never heard any noise that loud in my life.
I was working in Tn in 01 and won 100 on the SECCG. I had been telling the Tn guys that they were going to lose all week. After that game is when I lost any and all respect I ever had for Phil Fulmer.

I was not in good shape after this game. Took everything I had not to puke everywhere as I crotched outside a concession trailer on the north end of the stadium. Wild Turkey and Lortabs had me tore up. Game was hype though!!!

For sure one of the greatest times ever.
my freshman year at LSU, frat house at 5 AM, LSU getting no respect from national media, epic tailgate, weather was cool and sky was overcast, party downtown that night with bitching arse cover band to cap off. Everything about that game was huge for LSU and all the fans/students.

aside from all its other greatness, that game was the first time i recall hearing (or maybe just being sober enough to notice) the announcer say the schpiel about "the sun is finding its home in the western sky, and it is saturday night in death valley" or whatever

The LSU chant that broke out AFTER Georgia's long td pass is one of my most memorable moments in tiger stadium. The tigers weren't going to be denied that day.

Actually, in my mind the 2003 SEC Championship Game win over GA is where we really established ourselves as perennial contenders. Then the 2003 NC win solidified it.
YMMV

What got LSU into elite status was being elite. That happened before that game. In fact, we'd already won the SEC under Saban by that time.

This.
Everyone else posting in this thread must have amnesia. LSU didn't achieve "elite status" after the regular season win over UG. All LSU heard after that game was the national pundits claiming that the better team lost that day. UG had a chance to prove that the first game was a fluke by winning the SEC championship game rematch in their own home state but then LSU blew them out.
For what it's worth, Mark May might be the first national commentator to say that LSU was one of the nation's best after the win over Ole Miss.

Nah... I sat thru the blowout loss to Florida that year and I still say Florida was the only team that might've had a chance against Miami.
LSU really spared Tenn an embarrassing loss in the NC.

Of all the games I've been to this was my favorite. The crowd was electric and as loud as I have ever heard it. I was a great played football game and as stated, the game truly lifted LSU back into the elite program status...
But the thing that I'll always remember was the crowd....It was deafening the entire game...And for me it left me with one of the greatest quotes I've have ever heard about an LSU game..It was my best friend The Swan Dogs first LSU game...As we were walking back to our car he said "Thought I was coming to see a football game...What I attended was an f'ing religious experience..I'm in every year.."

Yep UGA scores on that 90+ yard play, the crowd gets quiet (in disbelief) during the play, then starts chanting and getting louder and louder right after UGA scores. Mark Richt and some UGA players had this "WTF is going on?" look on their faces. They were shocked at the crowd's reaction. It was awesome!
