Beckham and the over the shoulder catch? (comments from coaches are welcomed)

During the Auburn game, Beckham chose to high point the ball and catch facing the ball. In three of those instances the defender chose to watch him catch it and stick their in hand in front and knock the ball away.
Why doesn't he use the over the shoulder catch more? Seems like it would be more difficult to defend as he wold be using his body to shield the defender from the football. High pointing the ball is more effective if the receiver has a height and or size advantage.
serious answers/ comments are appreciated.

Over the shoulder is a harder catch I would imagine.
Harder to defend too. Some risk/reward when making the decision.

If you're near the sideline or back of the endzone, at some point you have to stop running and just go up for the ball.

Lsuzealot nailed it. Nothing really else to discuss.

I don't reacall any instance where Beckham should have tried to catch a ball over the shoulder and didn't.

The pass along the sideline in between the corner and the safety?

Right...in most cases it has to do with ball placement. Of course, receivers are taught to catch the ball with their hands out in front of them when they can. I've never seen anyone suggest allowing a ball to go past you so that you can turn your shoulders and catch the ball as it passes you over the shoulder. Assuming the ball and defender are in the same place, you'd always want to get your hands our front and as close to the QB and ball as possible to give the defender less space to make a play/pick.
What the OP is describing sounds more like a reaction to ball placement...an adjustment rather than proper technique.

You have to high point the ball with a defender on you in that situation. Imagine the situation you described. If he turns his back to catch it over his shoulder then what was to stop the DB from high pointing it and intercepting it.

Right. There are instances where you'd catch a ball over your shoulder, but they are almost always something like this...without the guy's arm coming out of the ground obviously.
Rest of the time you're going to try and get out front.
Want to talk about bad technique, let's talk about receivers that continue to let balls hit them in the damn chest and cradle it and then look stunned the ball bounced off of them.

This seems correct. I noticed three catches where Beckham had his man beaten, Mett made the throw but the defender was able to knock the ball away late because it was right in front of him when Beckham came down. His numbers would have looked much better with those catches.
Seems like Auburn noticed this on film and made adjustments in defending him.

Another thing to remember is that alot of time when we do goto the pass, we are in 2nd or 3rd and long. I can't recall off the top of my head what our down and distance was on that first throw to Beckham, but I seem to remember it being 3rd down (someone can correct me if I am wrong).
Anyway, in that situation the thought is to get a first down, so in this case I think Beckham wanted to turn and make the sure grab as opposed to try over the shoulder with a higher chance of dropping the ball, but a higher chance the defender doesn't catch him and its a TD. The priority is always moving the chains.

quote:His misses in the first game and some last year were on these types of catches. It may be a problem with catching while keeping in stride. It looks like he is trading off the YAC for making sure he catches the ball, which is fine with me.
Beckham and the over the shoulder catch?
Edit: I did notice that he caught a pass or two early in the Kent State game in stride. He might be working on it in certain situations.
