Again, there is a difference in 2 solo tackles out of 20 and 5 out 10. That is the major issue.
Minter had 130 tackles last year and a ton of assists, but it was still 55/75 or 42% solo tackles. Those are what has to be made. If your starting MLB only gets 20% solo tackles and the other team isn't running it well, fine. If they are running amazingly and that's the stat, something is wrong.
Just watch the games and watch Welter and Barrow. They simply aren't getting it done. They aren't hitting the right gaps, and losing contain, and continually are out of position. If this is happening this much, maybe Welter isn't as good at setting up the defense as some like to think.

To give you an idea. Minter averaged 4.2 solo tackles a game last year. Wetler is at 1.5 solo tackles a game. Even if you take out his UF game, Minter had over 3 solo tackles a game.
not arguing that welter is better or even our best option, he may be. but id like to see amount of snaps played as well. Dont recall minter coming off the field too often. weve moved guys around a lot at linebacker.
and like i saud, we played a good bit of a 4-1-6 with kwon being the onky backer on the field.
the game wasnt in doubt and chavis is still giving diff looks.
Uf still ran us in the dirt with minters 17 solo tackles. im still not understanding the big diff in one guy making a tackle as opposed to 2. again anytime one oerson tried to tackle hill, he was gone.

Auburn averaged 4.1 yds per carry
When the game was in doubt, in the first quarter, our LBs were stuffing Auburn. When Auburn started running all over us it was primarily because of lazy Dline play. Take the ten yard TD run around Auburn's right side. Lewis Neal started out fine, sealing the edge. When he saw the back head towards the interior he pinched down and lost contain. Then the back broke to the outside, and there was no DE there.

exactly, dline play is what will hurt us. We lack serious depth.
Lets go back to our defense in 11. 3 dbs lead the team in tackles. Not our linebackers. TM7 had 59 solo tackles.
Last season our 2 leading tacklers were linebackers. Minter had 55 solo tackles and was the leading tackler on the team.
One big glaring difference i see is, no eric reid. Who was top 3 in tackles each of the last 2 seasons.

There are some real dumbasses in this thread
Dline was getting pushed all night
Welter was out when significant yards were gained

Welter has 6 solo and 11 assisted, so hes ahead of that 42%. And he doesnt play every down. Again when we go less than 3 backers, welter doesnt play.

I need to rewatch tonight, but we had one linebacker on the field when they were gashing us.

A big issue is MLB. DTs are actually playing well but they can only do so much up the middle. When Welter does hit someone up the middle he gets ran over and allows another 2-3 yards easy while he's hanging on to their ankles. If we don't have better options than him then we're in trouble period. He takes very poor angles too. This is really apparent on outside runs. He takes REALLY BAD angles there and you will immediately recognize it when he's trotting 5 yards behind the RB.
I really don't care what his stats were other night. He stuck out like a sore thumb on the bad plays. He did make a few nice stops though.

Keep in mind the type of offense Auburn runs and the way we defended it. I agree the LB spot has been a weakness but scheme makes it seem worse going forward than it really is.
Our Offense is clicking and along with the big leads this has allowed LSU to play a Vanilla defense further into the season than probably ever before in LSU history.
Look for Chavis to dial up some run stuffing plays on defense when they play Ga.!
Great post, very valid points. Boy I sure hope you are right, because I hate to be the one that is the glass half empty. I would much prefer to be the glass is half full!!!

Think about this. Minter and Barrow, our senior starting LBers have combined 9 solo tackles in 4 games. NINE!
Geauxgurt, I like the way you think. Are you saying that the Cardinals are giving us back Minter for his last year of eligibility!!! We will officially win the UGA game Minter is coming back!!!
Posted on 9/23/13 at 6:14 pm to Dudebro2
Also, scheme wise you give up the interior rush when playing spread teams in order to protect the edge.....
Playing a pro style offense this week will allow the D to match hat for hat in the box and it plays to our strengths!

welter played every snap against TCU and had maybe 2 tackles
His tackles are 10 yards downfield every time. He's made 2 open field tackles against goofy QBs on the run that were short of 5 yards of the LOS and thats about it. Comparing him to Minter in any way is like comparing Ronnie Lott to Rockey Duplessis.

Yea and if you watch the game again you'll see when he's in on a tackle solo he gets dragged forward each time. He definitely isn't a stonewall like Minter was.

what are you trying to say. I watch the games just like Chavis does. I bet he puts his pants on one leg at time in the morning same as I do

Oh believe me, i saw when he was having trouble chasing some plays down. But to act like the yards were gained while he was playing is asinine. He played a much better game than he has.
Im still sticking with lack of dline depth as what will be our downfall on d. No quentin thomas meant we had basically no one to back up ego and freak. That is a concern. Allen was playing DT at points.

I laugh when people say there are no good defenses in the SEC this year. May be true but that is no reason to throw in the towel and for our defense to not strive to achieve greatness.
I totally agree with you, and to expand on that thought yes we have been DBU & DLU but Chief is the LB coach that unit should be da-bomb every year.

TWhis is true, but there is a different style of runners in other offenses, they were gashing us a bit with the read option.
Posted on 9/23/13 at 6:23 pm to dgnx6
Dline depth is a concern. The thing is though the DTs have played pretty well. Freak isn't making many plays because he's almost always doubled up. If your DTs are getting doubled then your LBs should fill the gaps and IMO, they're way too passive this season. LBs is definitely the weak link on this defense right now.
