Well done. I don't think his number should be retired either, but the meaning of this one is a bit different and special and I guess I can respect the saints organization for that. Very classy move by saints.

Agreed. I don't know the number but I'm sure it's not a marquee number but even if it was- every organization should have a few folk heroes. The Saints just extends beyond football and honestly, I like that. I hope by this NOLA continues to pour money into ALS research.

My cousin has ALS so I identify with the cause. I think Gleason has been a great public face/hero and I'm glad he is using his last remaining years to promote NWF.

I just see it as a win-win for the organization. No where does it say positive PR doesn't produce positive results. I have used NWF as my nonprofit org of choice this year for taxes.

I hope they find a cure and for his efforts they should retire his jersey. Why not? It's a local thing and means more to us than anyone else. It's not like its being retired by the league.

Most memorable play is subjective. Although top three, I doubt Gleason's block would beat out Hartley's kick or Porter's pick 6 in the SB.

Oh, we're going by statues. So Gene Stallings was as good as Bear Bryant and Nick Saban.

They're not making a statue in front of the Dome for something that happened in Florida.

FWIW, Guys on WWL just said that they highly doubt Payton leads the chant.

Eta: then Christian comes back on and says he heard Payton is going to do it

In whose opinion besides yours?

It's a team by team decision based upon whatever criteria that team chooses to use. Jeezus Christ.

Retirement is not the proper call.

According to whose criteria? Is there some written or even unwritten objective standard that I don't know about?

An individual team can choose to retire a number for whatever reason it considers worthy. In this particular case, Gleason made one of the top ten plays in Saints history (at the very least, top ten) both symbolically and substantively.

Beyond that, it's not just because he became "sick". It's what he has done after his diagnosis that is admirable. In addition to his memorable play, he has been an inspiration to everyone. Seems a good enough reason to retire his jersey to me.

I wouldn't mind if they put his name outside on the roof of the dome if it would help to piss off some of these tards.

That's how I feel about retired numbers. I didn't say all HOF players, just the elite ones.
This statement is funny.

Thanks, didn't see that confirmed anywhere and it wasn't on Twitter. I would have liked that.

The problem with retiring lots of numbers is that you run out of numbers.

The reasoning is pretty stupid too if you know anything about the Saints. They have 2 retired numbers, Jim Taylor and Doug Atkins. Taylor played here for 1 yr and Atkins 3 yrs or so. Taylor had like 300 yards and 2 TDs all year that year.
I was around back then. That was the John Mecom era. I'm pretty sure both guys (Taylor & Atkins) came to the Saints with the understanding that their numbers would be retired by the organization. Football fans had a problem with the decision back then, but Mecom did it anyway. It was a bad decisioon on his part, but not the worst by a long shot. Hiring an astronaut as the general manager was probably the worst. Hiring JD Roberts as a head coach was a contender. The list is endless.
