Don't know if it's just jersey and/or if his name will be hanging down from the roof like Archie, Rickey and the others. But that's what was said on WWL minutes ago

I love Gleason. I love the Saints. I almost cried when he made the play. I have lost a family member to ALS. What he has done is courageous. I admire him more than any Saint, past or present.
But I'm just not sure that he should get his number retired because he got sick. Because I think that was the deciding factor in this.

So you think having a jersey retired is that big of a deal?
Some of you people, holy frick

I think that's the main point here. Manning, Roaf, and Morton Anderson don't have their numbers retired. I mean, who really gives a frick about retired jerseys? I'm glad they're gonna do it now instead of after he passes. At least he and his family can experience it together.

Has Brian Piccolo had his number retired? Actually, I have no idea.

If its not a big deal, then why are there like half a dozen Saints with that honor?

2. The Saints have 2 retired jersey numbers. Jim Taylor (played for the Saints for 1 year) and Doug Atkins (played w Saints for 3 years). Both made their marks w other teams.

This is a bad move IMO. Have a ceremony for him, give him some money, honor him in other ways, but having your number retired should be an exceedinly rare event for a team and it shold be reserved for those who earned that distinction on the field over the course of a career.
Huge sign of respect by the organization and I am in full favor of it. There are going to be some crying grown arse men on Sunday.
I don't feel it takes away from those retired with accomplishment at all; this is a Saint that deserves to be remembered, and he will pass knowing that he will be.

Ugh, that's what I'd expect a Falcons fan who knows jack shite about the man or the situation to say.

Because some things are bigger than football.
I can understand the guy living in Los Angekes not understanding Gleason's impact, but people living in Nola i won't give a pass too.

There aren't rules to why someone should have their jersey retired.
There are PLENTY examples of guys who weren't great players who've had their jersey retired.
The Pelicans have a Bobby Phills jersey hanging in the arena. Phills was an average/above average player and never played in New Orleans. If people felt the need to be dicks, they could bitch about it. But whats the point?

Retired number should Only be for Hall of Fame elite players. No one in Saints history deserves that honor. Brees deserves it after he retires.
Players like Walter Payton, John Elway, Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Jim Brown etc. are the only types of players that should have their jersey retired.
Don't even get me started on Jackie Robinson and Wayne Gretzky.

You can accuse me of being a Falcons fan, but if you think Gleason gets this honor if he doesn't have ALS, you are flat-out wrong. Everybody remembers the play, but nobody was inviting him to the Superdome until the day of the Texans game when the story came out.
