I posted this on Saints board but this is news worthy for all former players who actually are battling impairments and not just looking for a quick handout.

For example, former Saints defensive back Steve Gleason, who has spent the past few years valiantly battling ALS, is eligible for a seven-figure payment — even though he didn’t sue the NFL.
Because the settlement expands the pool of 4,500-plus plaintiffs into a class that encompasses all retired players and creates a system for ensuring that only men with severe cognitive impairment will be compensated, Gleason automatically is eligible.
Under the formula that has been created, he can get up to $5 million from the $675 million compensation fund.

I'm sure his family and people who take care of him constantly really appreciate that.

Certainly would make things easier for the family and those like him who have serious issues arising from their days in the NFL

One of my all-time fav players. The guy just loved the game.

I would imagine they respect the fact he is bowing out gracefully and with some dignity. Much stronger legacy to leave his family than some extra money.

$5 million isn't 'some extra money'. Its freaking life changing and could last for generations if invested right.

Did he somehow get ALS from playing football?

There is a higher incidence of former nfl players that develop ALS when compared to the general population, but its unknown what the root cause is.

Doesn't matter, still tainted. Sure it would be hard to turn down but I respect him for doing so.
I'm sure he has a pretty solid life insurance plan as well and isn't going to be leaving them broke.

He should swallow his pride (if he can actually still swallow of course) and take the money.

what makes it so honorable? the money would be helping his family for frick's sake. not like he's going to grab 5 mil and spend it on hookers and blow.

He hasn't turned down anything. He just didn't join in the lawsuit.
He still gets the 5 million, which he will almost certainly take and give to his foundation, or hopefully his family.

Opting not to try and weasel your way into money you don't deserve instead of taking the handout like most everyone out there these days is honorable imo.
You may disagree.
