It's certainly in the conversation. I don't know how anyone could view that as laughable enough for multiple emoticons. It's not like there have been a plethora of great sci-films the past two decades.

This list from Popular Mechanics has Children of Men at #20 all time, and just about every movie ahead of it is older than 20 years:

I agree with you to a certain extent. Children of Men was a very good movie, but it's treated like the Godfather by a lot of people on here. It just isn't. It's very artistic, it has real tension, and solid performances by the actors, but it drags a bit at parts and didn't quite grab me as I hoped it would. It may be that I just need to see it again since the last I saw it was in theaters.

You are spot on about Bullock, though. She really is just not a good actress. She was fine in the Blindside, but her winning the Oscar that year was an affront to artists everywhere. Everything else she's been in she really wasn't that good in, including her comedies, which are largely carried by her "supporting" actors.

Clooney is a bit smug and a little too political for me, but he is a solid actor and I like most of the things he's in.

This movie has potential, but I'm not going to nut myself over a handful of reviews, even if they are from Variety.

Please do not encourage him.

I literally laughed out loud in the theater when I saw the preview. I'll give it a shot but I'm not putting to much into it.

100% on Rotten Tomatoes after 23 reviews. And, more impressive, an average score of 8.8 out of 10 from all 23 reviews.

Some snippets...

"This isn't just the best-looking film of the year, it's one of the most awe-inspiring achievements in the history of special-effects cinema."

"This is truly awesome."

"I haven't yet fully recovered."

"A master class in fluid camerawork, bold, unfussy imagery and special effects that put most recent Hollywood blockbusters to shame."

"If the film past is dead, Gravity shows us the glory of cinema's future. It thrills on so many levels."

"A staggering achievement of the visual form and a gripping survival tale to boot, Gravity is the tour de force film experience that Cuarón's career has always been building towards."

"Gravity is the film that cinema was born to make."

"Every once in a while, a film comes along that pushes the form to such an extent that it throws down the gauntlet to other filmmakers, daring them to be as audacious in their craft. This is one of those."

Still looks meh to me. Couldn't have picked a worse pair of a-list names IMO.

Also, it's pretty damn clear that they head towards the ISS. This movie will have I one of three endings:

Happy one: they both make it there safely and get home safely.

Grim one: they dead.

Half and half: One of them (Clooney) sacrifices themself for the other. Bullock's character is suppose to be a mom. Clooney is suppose to be a workaholic dad. Either he will sacrifice himself because he doesn't want her to become him or she will do it because she got to do what he never did.

I'm interested to see what the anti-cgi crowd has to say about this movie because it's SFX are at best equal to other ones and they sure as shite didn't film this piece on location.

I just can't wrap my mind around being trapped in Sandra Bullock's head for two hours. And if that's not what the movie is like then the preview did it an injustice.

Exactly. Throw all the glowing reviews of it at me you want, Bullock annoys the shite out of me.

Ever think that, maybe, considering the absolutely glowing, universal praise, and the director's previous strong work...you might be wrong?

There really was no hate until she won her Oscar for The Blind Side. Granted it wasn't really deserved but that was a VERY weak year she won it in. Still...I feel she's good at what she does. She's not a superb actress but she gets the job done.

Imagine the hate if Bullock pulls a Hillary Swank and wins her second Oscar in the leading category.

2 nominations, 2 wins!

Meh is an opinion, not me stating a fact. Movies are a form of art. Art is subjective.

This is coming from someone who was initially intrigued by the project when it was announced (I enjoyed Children of Men, but not the ensuing overhype that followed) and kept tabs on who was being brought into test for it. Of all the names that were rumored/tested for the project, these two were the two I least wanted. Even then, I still had hope for it because I love sci-fi films and I LOVE space films. Love them.

When I was a kid and into my teen years, I absolutely was enthralled with the idea of two genres of movies: Big budget superhero movies and big budget space epics. As an adult, I have had plenty of satisfying superhero movies. However, I still haven't gotten any real big budget space epics (I was born in '76 so my first experience with big budget space epics were those movies, but there hasn't been anything near that scale since).

So needless to say, I wanted this movie to be great. So bad casting (at least for my preferences aside) aside, I was still on board. Then the previews came along and it confirmed my near worst fear: That bad casting would be the focal point of the entire movie. There would be the initial disaster and then they would float, have faux drama, discuss their current/past life issues in a boring cliche exposition, and then reach their safeguard (with one of the three endings I predicted earlier).

I thought that the space shots would look much better than they do, but even in 3D it just looks boring. I get that space is a vacuum and all, but it just looks so.... bland.

frick it, I'll go see it, but unless they have some twist (aliens?), I'll probably be disappointed.
