Why do you think CSP felt Will Smith would be a competent NFL linebacker?

Not to beat a deadhorse...because this thread is about our Defense as a whole and not just Smith, but I think its obvious that our outside backers will be a weak spot in coverage this season.
I know enough about a 34 to know that your outside guys do not rush every down. And as we saw in the first preseason game...we were getting torched in the flats by the Chiefs starters. What do you think ATL will plan to do in week 1? Throw to Jackson and Rogers in the flats.
I just heard Detellier (sp?) On epsn radio discussing this very topic and it got me thunking: Will CSP move Will Smith around and even others if they struggle or just stick it out this season and have the players learn by trial and error try to add depth next offseason?
Thoughts on our defense guys? And here's to a good season

It is my belief that CSP, out of deference for the veteran player, is giving Will Smith the best possible opportunity to succeed.
That's why he's starting with the ones.
It is my hope that CSP is open to removing him if he continues to underperform.

Pretty much how I feel about it too

I think there are about six million reasons!

He'll probably stay on the roster due to the cap figure that we'd lose anyway. I can't fault him for trying something unique with what we have, but I had this pegged from the start. It was a longshot.
I am most disappointed with them getting Vacarro when a perfectly fine OLB was on the draft board, but hey, both our secondary and linebackers were in pretty bad shape. My argument was the fact of importance of the OLB position in a 3-4. I truly hope Martez Wilson will be available for that game - if not we could have a really bad day.

IIRC, didn't Smith play some 3-4 OLB in college? I think the main reason is money though, it costs almost as much to cut him as to keep him, so you give him every chance to succeed as a starter before asking him to swallow his pride and be a backup.

One of the marks of this regime has been the best player plays regardless of contract and draft position. Although smart/coachable/experienced seems to win out when the guy behind him isn't significantly better, see Scott Shanle.

He is giving him a shot to make the team and to be a contributing factor. He has respect for him many in our fan base.

Fresh Prince should be a long snapper.

I understand letting a veteran compete but instead of asking him to loose alil weight and olb in the 3-4, why not let him add a couple pounds and play 3-4 end? I thought he holds up against the run well enough to hold the end. He should be part of the d line rotation not part of the linebacker group.

its all about trying to keep a longtime veteran and defensive leader on the team. And we'd benefit virtually nothing from cutting him. The issue that everyone found prior to the draft was we were weak at OLB because no one was proven there and we were also equally if not worse off at the time at safety. I thought that we will probably cut harper next year and malcolm jenkins isn't that great so we'd be down 2 starters at safety so why not shore up on a legit prospect at safety in vaccaro. That way next year, if vaccaro pans out, we are good at on one safety and can grab a good OLB just incase our main 3 didn't pan out.

This.

That's true on offense, not on defense.
Sed Ellis over A. Hicks last year
Shanle over Dunbar and anyone else
Harper and Jenkins over IAQ last year
PRob over Corey White and Mack
Again, most of those decisions were on Spags who is a highly functioning retard as far as I'm concerned.
I still think Will Smith's best chance at competing for a spot would have been a move to offensive tackle.

It's all part of the smoke screen for unleashing the best defense in the league come early September.

He needs to be at DE. Perfect size

I get the salary cap ramifications regarding Will Smith. Simply put, he is a fish out of water at the OLB position. He is a MAJOR LIABILITY in pass coverage, as the Chiefs clearly exposed. No amount of weight loss is going to make him fast enough to function at a high level at that position. He is slower than Shanle. This experiment is doomed to fail. Again, I get why they are trying to do it salary cap wise, but Will Smith really cannot play anymore. Sad but true.
