With the fall of USC due to sanctions and coaching, the two that have stepped up to carry the PAC mantle are Oregon and Stanford. Oregon makes sense to me given Chip Kelly and the money of Nike, but Stanford does not. While no doubt they have had good coaching, I see them as the academic powerhouse of the conference, not the football powerhouse. What is going on at programs like Washington, UCLA, Cal, and Colorado? I would have thought they were more likely to take the mantle. What am I missing? Am I underestimating the football program that is Stanford?

Stanford does have a pretty good football history and they run a very good program from the top down.

Stanford has the biggest endowment in I-A.

They have a strong overall athletics history.

Their success says nothing about other schools, just as whatever Vanderbilt does says nothing about LSU.

Bad coaching and administration.

Yes. Stanford is recruiting outstanding in areas like offensive line and QB. They are recruiting great in other areas too, and are starting to build a very large foundation for future success.

They aren't going anywhere but up

Yes, and they've made successive brilliant hires for Head Coach, now.

Bad-to-Mediocre hires with a touch of impatience. All 4 of those have some decent history behind them as well. Its all about the right hires and putting for the right resources and emphasis on the football program.

I think it says something about the rest of the league. Stanford is a fantastic program but like 7 or 8 of those programs in the PAC are garbage.

both of these programs have had large amounts of success. they have both been in a rut this past decade. UCLA seems like they are on their way out of it

If you have the talent and half a brain, you'd be insane to turn down Stanford as a recruit.

If my son had offers from every FBS school in the country, I'd push for Stanford. It's a future changer.

Good coaching and recruiting. I'll expand later when I have more time but we've been able to maximize potential on the field better than most programs.

I think Stanford is an above average team that plays solid defense. It's just that the PAC 12 is a miserable conference.

What does Texas A&M's recent football success say about other SEC teams?

In their first year in the SEC, afterr doing nothing ever in the Big12, they come in and, with a freshman QB, only suffer two losses and beat the best team in the conference.

You should have started this lame thread on the rant.

To me the big difference is the PAC12 has always been known for their QBs and skill positions. Stanford realizes that success comes from the trenches. They've had an awesome defense the last couple years and have the hogs to grind out games. They're very SEC-like actually.

Well, as of now, UCLA looks to be moving the right direction. They fielded a strong football team last season (9-5, notable wins over Nebraska and USC. They lost their last three: Stanford twice and Baylor) and appear to have made a good hire in Jim Mora. They pulled in a top 10 recruiting class last season too if I am not mistaken.

The one that surprises me is Washington. They have a tremendous amount of history and I am a fan of Sarkisian. They are updating their stadium and field competitive teams. They just can't seem to take that jump to the next level. They'll pull the occasional upset and follow it up with an embarrassing loss (2010: Loss to BYU/Win over USC 2012: Win over Stanford/Loss over Washington State). They just seem to be a 7-5 team every single season.
