Here's why it is a bad idea to write physical thank you letters after interviews

I just went to the old building my team used to work at to meet with someone. On the way back I happened to pass our old mail room and just for the heck of it decided to check our old inter-office mailbox. Keep in mind that our entire team moved to a new building at the beginning of the year. Coincidently, I found a bunch of unopened mail in my manager's mailbox and brought it over to him. In all that crap he found a couple of thank you letters that candidates had mailed him when he had interviewed them for jobs late last year. Suffice to say, none of those guys work for us.
I am not saying those post interview thank you letters would have made a difference, but if they were in fact going to make a difference, they never reached the person on time. Nobody opens their snail mail regularly anymore at work anymore. What happened today was an accident.
Just email your thank you letters if you want to send one. Hand written letters are weird, old fashioned, out of place, and for the most part useless for the current corporate work place.

The last Interview I had (for the job I currently am holding)...I just emailed the lady a few hours later. It was pretty casual (but appreciative of the opportunity), and at least she got it.

I would hand deliver never mail. If hand delivering isn't an option I'd then email.

As I've said here in other threads, at my company we decide whether to extend an offer within a half-hour of the last interview of the day. Thank-yous are a total waste of time these days.

in what situation would a thank you email or letter make any difference in a job interview?
I cant imagine not hiring someone because they didnt write a thank you note and I certainly cant imagine turning down a higher qualified candidate because someone wrote a thank you note.
its just pretty stupid IMHO.

Well at my current job they thanked me for writing a letter and then offered me it so...
Eta I don't actually think it had anything to do with why I got the job but my boss did acknowledge it.

I dont know, but it certainly doesnt hurt to take 90 seconds to send a thank you email

At the last job I got, I interviewed with about 10 different people. I sent everyone an email the next day, and hand wrote three thank you cards for all the interviewers over the age of 50.

Really. Law offices and utilities would tend to disagree.

If you're applying at your company. But that is definitely not true everywhere, and there are many places that operate on a much slower timeline. A thank you note is one of those things that cannot hurt you (unless your thank you note is borderline illiterate), and costs basically nothing.
Also, OP needs to fire the mail guy.
