The advantage that some of the Negro League players had in accomplishing milestones is that likely played at least 200 games a year.

Obviously, the other elite contemporaries such as ole N****r Lips himself, more commonly known as Babe Ruth, only were able to count homers from 154 games a year. If you counted Ruth's totals from barnstorming tours, Spring Training, the world tour in Japan, etc, then Babe Ruth would have had the highest home run total IMO.

Gibson is still one of the great home run hitters of all time, and he only lived to 35. However, Cooperstown credits Gibson with over 800 home runs. Sadaharu Oh of Japan has the highest official home run total of 868.

Are there any legitimate sources out there claiming he was in fact half black?

Only lived until 35.. that's what I think is so remarkable about his alleged feat.

Thanks for the comments guys

Ruth was not half black, but it is rumored that there was some mixed blood in the family.

The 800 HR total is probably fabricated. The Negro Leaguers did a lot of barnstorming tours and would play local industry teams. So they'd beat the local plant's team 20-1 or some such nonsense.

But Gibson was still awesome. As was Paige. Soul of the Game is a good movie about them, and the Joe Posnanski book is pretty outstanding, if not a history of the league. Only the Ball Was White is a decent documentary on the Negro Leagues. There's no "definitive" history of the league, but I like The Forgotten League, if you want something to read.

I guess I forgot to include that part in my post. I actually think Gibson may have approached 800 homers, but most of them were off of townspeople. They played almost every day, so he had a lot more than 154 or even 162 opportunities to smash bombs off of inferior competition.

The Sunday exhibitions were supposedly great games where Negro League teams would play one another or occasionally played a Major league club. I forgot his name, but there was one center fielder who was so good on Sundays, but he did not care against the local teams during the week, so he would sit or read while in the field.

Was reading a piece a a while back, about how he hit 6 home runs in one day. They played a double header against the local high school and then played against a group of workers from the town that evening.

Back in 1980 I got the chance to chat with a Negro League player who made a speech in Shreveport.

At the reception I asked him about facing Satchel Paige.

He said "It wasn't so much how hard he threw his fastball. It was that he could place it anywhere he wanted."

That's essentially what makes great pitchers today. Ya gotta be able to throw into a 4 inch square target.

The best pitch in baseball is a well-located fastball.

Whitey Herzog played with him in KC in the fifties. Said one time they were shagging flies in the outfield and Whitey noticed a hole in the fence just bigger than a baseball. Whitey bet Satch that he couldnt throw the ball through the hole from the distance of the pitchers mound. Said Satchel said is the hole bigger than the ball? Whitey said yes and Satchel said okay. They marched off the distance and Satch through it right through the hole first try.

Ty Cobb refused to share hotel rooms with the Bambino because of those rumors.

And %$^& Landis for robbing those players of the opportunity to play in the majors, and baseball fans of the opportunity to see those greats.

So like a Homer Plessy thing going on? Was he treated or looked at any differently in the south?

I think it was mostly other players who taunted him. For the most part, Ruth lived life like Rob Gronkowski could only dream of.

Do you have any literature you'd recommend or is this just stuff you've heard?
