That UCLA coach gambled on that trick play and it didn't pay off.
It's the errors that hurt us. It happens in baseball.
UCLA was up and that gamble didn't cost them two outs. They lost nothing on that trick play.
The 2nd part I agree with. It's part of baseball. But I don't think the coaching did us any favors.

The bats are terrible. They want them to perform like wood but they don't.
I've watched a couple reports on the bats and baseballs, one was just the other day. Seams on the college ball are twice as raised as on a MLB ball. It seems the bats do perform in tests like wood bats, but the baseballs with raised seams have more drag than the MLB baseball and don't go as far when hit with the same energy
Many of those long pup ups that die on the track would probably go with less drag.

This seems reasonable. The question now is how long will it take the NCAA to change the ball?

It's amazing that the official press release from the CWS can't even spell PM's name right

If scoring in the CWS stays low, hopefully next year. It's the most cost effective way to increase production

Any coach would gamble
He was gambling with a shitty hand. You know RR has a tendency to hit into the DP, and he is not fast enough to beat out a DP ground ball hit anywhere on the infield. Good teams generally get lucky, but only when they design their circumstances to facilitate the arrival of a lucky break. Our lucky break that inning was the base knock, and we would have reaped the rewards if the coach doesn't go off script at the most important juncture of the game

except that he called the hit and run to avoid the double play. We got the pitch we wanted, but our best hitter pulled the ball
I was all for hanging him, but the hit and run changes everything

that sounds like a good decision that came up snake eyes.
CPM knew what he was doing there. It just turned out bad.

Sounds reasonable to me. The man is a great baseball coach and knows more about baseball than anyone on this site....combined. Took a chance and it didn't work. It happens.

All year I would have had Raph hit in that situation, and he's had a propensity to hit into double plays,
No other thoughts should have been necessary.

I'm sure Raph loves hearing that
It doesnt matter if he likes hearing it or not. Its the truth. I bet you have a bunch of participation medals in your garage.

Well, that has been his style since day one. We aren't a bunting team and we often suck at doing it. Not sure why you change your philosophy once you get to Omaha.
In a pitcher's park you have to adjust. We hit at least 3 homers yesterday in most parks but we weren't playing in most parks so we were essentially giving away outs. You can't just play against your competition at TD you have to play against the field as well.

I knew Mason was a very heady base runner
Huh?
I guess he's been watching a different Mason Katz for 4 years, because as superb an overall player as the young man is, baserunning is definitely his Achilles heel.

Game 1 of the CWS is no time to "gamble". That shite is for midweek games in march. Call it 20/20 hindsight or whatever you want, but in that situation you play by the book. I hope maineiri had fun pretending to be rainman because now we have serious issues
You have no idea how close that was to being a brilliant call. By putting hit and run on, the 2nd baseman crashes the base to cover or backup throw for steal creating a huge hole on the right side of the field. All you need at that point is a pitch on the outside corner to hit the other way. Rhymes got it and rolled over on it instead of doing what he was supposed to. It was a poorly executed play by the batter, but it was a great call, and was solely put on to keep them OUT of the double play. Rhymes didnt execute.

Reasonable explanation and Coach M does a great job of telling us what he was thinking at the time. Snakes eyes ![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/Iconbanghead.gif)

Yep, think the call was right, just came out bad on the deal. If he would have had Rhymes bunt and let's just say he bunts a popup to the pitcher everyone would be bitching that he should have never called a bunt there, it's a lose/lose with our fan base..

1 out>than 2
worst possible thing that could happen was a double play....and it happened

Bot 9th down 1 run hes gambling. Just great Mainieri.
If it works out, fans would be calling Mainieri a genius. We lost the game because of errors but I'm sure Ross and Bergman didn't make the errors on purpose.Folks, that is baseball and the breaks of the game.I can assure you no one feels worse about the situation than Ross and Bergman.Look on the bright side, we still have a chance to win it all.

The proper call IMO was to Take the 2-0 pitch, take another pitch if it goes to 3-0, bunt if it goes to 2-1 or 3-1.
However, PM had logical/rational reasons to do what we did, and unfortunately it simply didn't work out. That's baseball.
I personally disagree with our call in that situation, but despite my disagreement I don't think PM is an idiot for doing what we did. He tried something, it didn't work out. We played the situation aggressively, and it came back to bite us, but it's not the end of the world or a terrible coaching move by any means.
