My mistake.

The 6.7 Cummins is a stump-puller, no doubt.

It needed to be freshen up though and it looks like overall, Chrysler is upping their game.

The engine?

The engine definitely needed it. They stretched running without urea as far as they could and it was a good selling point, but they should be better engines now that they have it. Engineers have been working toward this point for quite a while now and they're getting to the end game that they've been preparing for. That's why you see a good engine from Ford. They didn't wait to find out the 6.4 was shite too before they started working on it, they've been building and re-building that motor for a while. We should be out of the shitty engine portion of diesels for a while. Ford got the short end by letting navistar build those two turds while they were working on the 6.7

Yes, the engine.

Agree with everything you said.

Pretty sure Ford ended up suing Navistar over the warranty claims on that engine. No telling how many buyers won't touch a Ford now, no matter what.

Navistar built a turd, but ford still sold it.

Now I realize that they had to market a diesel and they were busy with the final tier engine, but its not all on navistar.

The 2013+ engines should be the best we've seen since 2002. They've been preparing for this engine since the mid 90's.

Eta: I think this board is proof that ford guys are pretty loyal. Everybody knows those were shite motors and the new one doesn't even share an oil pan with the old one.

Yep.

And honestly, it didn't seem like a crazy idea.
Navistar has built a metric shite-ton of diesel engines, most of em pretty dang good.

From all the reviews, it looks like a solid engine. Two things concern me though.

1. there is no reliable long term data on the EcoBoost engine yet. How are those turbos going to be say 5 years from now? Repaires are going to be high cost.
2. With current incentives, you are paying $1500 extra for the V6 instead of the 5.0L V8 for just a bit better economy and horsepower. I'm going with the 5.0 for now. I'll let the EcoBoost get a few more years under the belt before I get one. JMO

Ford's Ecoboost is actually a variant of Mazda's MZR brand engine. It's been around for over 10 years, and has a really good rep. They learned some lessons from when it was installed in the Mazda CX7.

What was the displacement of that Mazada motor?

From what I've heard the only EcoBoost recalls are for the 1.7? in the Focus.

Yea but none with those tight regs and tight time limit.

The late 6 leakers were supposedly pretty damn good but couldn't overcome the name.

The duramax has changed a TON since its release but because its still a 6.6 people think its the same motor. I bet the current one doesn't share anything other than displacement with the original.

VetteGuy, are you knowledgable about all vette models, or just the newer ones? Reason I ask, I might try and restore my FIL's 78 silver two tone, L82, silver anniversary edition. I need a true value.

Downshift, remember to include a diesel clause in those claims.

Might want to add a V8 clause in there too. Toyota's VVTI laughs at 200k.

I'm not going to hate on GM too bad, but ill never own another one. I've owned 3 and they have been the worst 3 vehicles I've owned (and that is bad considering I've owned 4 jeeps)
The motors were solid in them but 2 had tranny failure at 100k and all three had the AC go out at some point.

I have a 2013 ecoboost on a 4x4

It's a beast and you shouldn't hesitate if its a good deal

They haven't been recalled but there is a TSB out for trucks that exhibit the power loss mentioned (very few). It's an intercooler fix.

I've been getting about 15-16 mpg with 34" tires and a fairly heavy foot

I just don't get all the love for the ecoboost. Great concept, but it gets marginally (if at all) better mileage than the 5.0 and has a history of problems. The 302 is one of the most proven motors ever built and has been around for ages. You could argue that the ecoboost has greater low end power, and the 5.0 starts making most of its power at higher rpm, but it's a half ton truck. The 5.0 will pull most things that you could safely pull with a half ton platform just fine.

i know several people whose ecoboost have left them stranded, turbos are drying out or something like that, no power. My brother drives one and barely gets 15mpg on conb avg

I don't follow ford really but the old 5.0 was killed off around 97 or so.

I highly suspect this ain't the same old engine, it's probably an overhead cam design.
