I have a some friends coming into town and they want to eat at one of the two, but I have not been to either. Which of these two is the better restaurant?

completely different atmospheres IMO. What kind of atmosphere do you want?

Straight cooking? Its better at Gautreau's.
Overall restaurant experience? Tie.

How are the atmospheres different? My friends will probably enjoy a more upscale type atmosphere. I am mostly interested in which restaurant has the better food, rather than the complete restaurant experience.

Gautreau's has more upscale/fine dining service whereas Clancy's has quality old school neighborhood restaurant service. Both have good food. Downstairs at Clancy's is more lively IMO.

The food is good at both. Not the same type of food, but all good. I think Clancy's is louder and livelier in atmosphere. Both can be very busy especially on weekends, so your answer could be where you can get the reservation.

Have never been to either.... how should I answer the OP?

I haven't been to Clancy's in 6 years.
I went to Gautreau's 2 weeks ago.

I'd vote for Clancy's and say its not really that close.

I wish Clancy's would put something besides that nasty rec-room carpet in the downstairs dining room.
I like their smoked soft shells, though.
As others have alluded, Gautreaus is much quieter and a bit more culinarily ambitious overall.

Gautreau's is a safer bet, IMO. Both are good but G's can be fantastic g

Gautreau's. More reserved/restrained, but not quite so clubby as Clancy's, and clearly better food. I think she's the best chef in town who isn't getting crazy national press.
